ALBANY, Ga. — The latest film-making venture by an Albany church is extending its reach.

“Courageous,” the fourth film from Sherwood Pictures, the moviemaking ministry of Sherwood Baptist Church, is expanding to 48 new cities this weekend.

Since premiering on Sept. 30 in 1,161 theaters, “Courageous” has remained a top 10-performing film.

“Of course we’re humbled and gratified by the reception for ‘Courageous,’” Michael Catt, senior pastor of Sherwood and an executive producer of the film, said in a statement. “But what really excites us is the chance to reach more people with the film’s vital message on families and fathering. As ‘Courageous’ expands to new cities, we’re thankful for the opportunity to do that.”

The new cities include Anchorage, Alaska, as well as cities in Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

There is also an additional theater in Georgia that will be showing the movie: Aurora Cineplex 10 in Roswell.

“Courageous” is being distributed by TriStar Pictures and is being marketed by Provident Films and AFFIRM Films. It tells the story of four law enforcement officers who are confident and focused on their job but struggle with their roles as fathers.

When tragedy strikes for one of them, they resolve to be better fathers and leaders.

As of Thursday evening, the film, which took $2 million to make, had brought in $17.9 million at the box office. It currently ranks No. 6 at the box office, just below “Dolphin Tale,” which is showing in roughly 3,400 theaters.

In its opening weekend, the film made $9.1 million and ranked No. 4 in box office receipts. Nearly 84 percent of Box Office Mojo readers have given “Courageous” a grade of A, and the film has earned a B+ overall.
