Grand jury hands Crips more charges

ALBANY, Ga. — Keeping pressure on Albany’s gangs, a grand jury handed down indictments in 116 cases against 32 Crips members Wednesday, according to a court official.

The 32 Crips were already charged based on the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Statutes when they were indicted Wednesday. The new indictments include street gang terrorism, possession of drugs such as Ecstasy and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to court paperwork.

It all continues a push against gangs by law enforcement that showed its muscle in August with the service of 400 warrants to about 54 Crips gang members. All were considered to be high in the gang hierarchy.

“We’ve streamlined the charges, added more charges and gang members we identified for crimes committed in September,” said District Attorney Greg Edwards.

By streamlining, Edwards said that he meant he will not waste time and resources on “those gang members with substantial time in prison, 30 years, to try them again.”

Under the RICO statues, a gang member is criminally responsible for whatever criminal activity members of his gang execute in furtherance of the gang’s organizational actions.

The RICO statute adds 25 years to underlying crimes such as drug possession, aggravated assault, burglary, street gang terrorism and other crimes for which indictments were given Wednesday.

Evidence was also taken by the grand jury on the intention of the district attorney to try 11 of the accused as recidivist criminals. A guilty verdict as a recidivist can also carry additional time in prison.

Police continue to search for Alvin Cross, 21, the last Crips gang member on the loose after the August RICO crackdown on the Crips gang.
