Four arrested after shooting at Monroe High School

ALBANY — Four young men were arrested Friday evening and charged with shooting toward a group of students as Monroe High School was letting out classes that afternoon.

According to Dougherty County School System Assistant Police Chief Julius Phillips, Desmone Muff, 21; Lentavious Morgan, 19; Akeem Hinds, 21, and Williams Davis, 19, were arrested and charged with aggravated assault, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm within a school zone.

Phillips said the incident took place as school was letting out on Friday. The four suspects drove up to the school on Lippett Drive in a white Ford Crown Victoria about 4 p.m., authorities say.

Phillips said an argument ensued and a single shot from a .44-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun was fired from inside the vehicle toward a group of students standing in front of the school.

No one was hit and the suspects fled the scene. Phillips said Muff is the suspected shooter.

DCSS police got a description of the vehicle and its occupants, and located the vehicle two hours later at 1300-A Colquitt Ave. All four suspects were inside the residence.

Phillips said a warrant was obtained and a search of the vechile resulted in the recovery of a loaded .44-caliber pistol, marijuana and a set of scales.

The suspects were then arrested. They remained in the Dougherty County Jail Monday.

Phillips added that charges of gang participation might also be tacked onto the four.

DCSS Public Information Director R.D. Harter termed the shooting “unfortunate,” but praised the work of the school system’s police for quickly finding and apprehending the suspects.
