Lee chamber schedules annual awards banquet

LEESBURG -- Atlanta author/columnist Jackie Gingrich Cushman, the daughter of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, will be the guest speaker at the Lee County Chamber of Commerce's 23rd annual community awards banquet Nov. 10.

Cushman's address will follow a banquet at the Hasan Temple in Albany, and the evening's highlight will be the presentation of community awards. Those honored by the chamber will be the man and woman of the year, the community's business of the year, the nonprofit of the year, partners in agriculture and education, and the chamber's ambassador of the year.

"As our slogan goes, we hold our banquet each year to honor the folks who make life work well in Lee County," Chamber Vice President/Marketing Director Lisa Davis said Monday. "We open nominations up to the entire community and have a committee that reviews the nominees and makes the decisions on the award winners.

"In addition to honoring the nominees in those categories, we will also take a little time this year to honor our community's first responders for the work they do in keeping us safe."

Cushman, who is founder of the Learning Makes a Difference Foundation, is co-author of "Five Principles for a Successful Life: From Our Family to Yours" -- which she wrote with her father -- and "The Essential American: 25 Documents and Speeches That Every American Should Own."

Tickets for the banquet, which are $35 for individuals, are available at the chamber. Tables, which seat eight, are also available for $250. The festivities kick off at 6 p.m.

Among the banquet's sponsors are Phoebe Community Visions, Procter & Gamble, Sumter EMC, Albany State University, Colony Bank, Georgia Power Co., LRA Constructors, First State Bank of Leesburg and Courtyard by Marriott.
