Dougherty Schools Thinking Pink Friday

ALBANY, Ga. — Dougherty County School Superintendent Joshua Murfee has asked schools to bring attention to those who are victims of breast and other cancers during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This coincides with Red Ribbon Week, aimed at reducing the negative effects of drug and alcohol abuse, which kicked off Monday.

Friday is designated Pink Out Day for breast cancer awareness across the school system and the schools have asked employees and students to wear pink Friday to show their support.

Some of the activities planned throughout the schools are:

  • Dougherty International Education Middle School students are participating in Red Ribbon Week activities, which opens with a parade today from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. down East Oglethorpe Boulevard between McDonald’s and Burger King. Students will carry banners with the message, “Say No to Drugs and Violence.”

Albany Police Department and school system officers will assist with the parade. All students and teachers are being asked to wear red today. The parade will leave the school on Massey Drive at 9 a.m.

  • West Town will be recognizing Pink Out Day as part of Reading Campaign Kick-off activities being held on Friday at 9 a.m. in the school gym. Faculty, staff, parents and students will be wearing pink ribbons attached to their storybook costumes.

The emcee, Juanita Reid, will do a short presentation on the significance of Pink Out Day and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The school’s morning news show will also do a feature segment on breast cancer awareness and Pink Out Day on Friday.

In addition to the Pink Out Day activities, Tommy Johns will present an educational and entertaining program “Reading Round Up!” The Radium Springs Middle Magnet School of the Arts’ Overall Players will perform, as well as the West Town cheerleaders and tumblers. The guest speaker is Romney Smith, lead news anchor for Fox 31.

  • Lincoln Elementary Magnet has something special planned for Pink Out Day on its front lawn at 1 p.m. Parents, partners, staff and students have all been invited to the special Pink event.
