An Albany Police Department officer photographs evidence found behind the Windmore Apartments off Gordeon Avenue after a 35-year-old man was fatally shot at about 4:50 p.m. Wednesday.
ALBANY ALBANY, Ga. — A 35-year-old man was fatally shot about 4:50 p.m. Wednesday at an apartment complex at 2304 Gordon Ave., Albany Police Department Deputy Chief Mark Scott said.
The gunman ran away from the Windover Apartments complex after the shooting, police said.
The victim, whose name was not immediately released, was shot twice and was taken by ambulance to an Albany hospital. It was believed that at least one shot hit the victim in the chest. Scott said that because no bullet casings were found at the scene, police believe the weapon used was a revolver.
Scott said that the two men had been seen walking through the apartments complex together. There was no motive given for the shooting.
Immediately after the incident, police began searching for a suspect described as a black, heavy-set man about 5 feet, 9 inches tall and wearing a white T-shirt. Reports said the shooter was in an older, blue Crown Victoria and may have been accompanied by three other men.
Neighbors in the apartment complex said the victim's name was "Melbo." He didn't live at the complex, but hung out at the Westside Grocery Store — a convenience store with its rear side facing the shooting scene across a wide grass-covered, storm-water ditch.
At the store, more than a dozen people stood around talking about the shooting. Everyone had something good to say about Melbo. He was described as the neighborhood barber, people who did not want their names used said. He had no gang connection, they said.
"He don't bother nobody," said one woman. "He goes out and picks pecans, cuts people's hair. He is a nice man."
