Leesburg man suspected in 4-county run

ALBANY, Ga. — Jake Shockley ripped through four counties in stolen cars holding up convenience stores with a pistol as he went, Worth County Sheriff Freddie Tompkins said.

Shockley, 25, faces charges of armed robbery, motor vehicle theft and other charges, Tompkins said. Shockley, is also under suspicion of armed robbery in Albany, he added.

“We have him under suspicion for armed robbery of the 66-year-old woman at the CVS store Wednesday,” said Phyllis Banks, Albany Police Department spokeswoman. “We won’t charge him until we question him.”

Apparently the spree started Wednesday in Lee County, where Lee County sheriff’s deputies say Shockley stole a 1996 Pontiac Firebird.

Shockley, Albany authorities believe, stopped at the CVS on Westover Boulevard the same night in Albany, flashed a pistol at a woman and demanded money. The woman refused and the gunman ran away, police reports said.

Because the stolen Firebird was found in Sylvester, police said that is where he stopped and stole a Chevrolet Impala at noon Thursday, Tompkins said.

From Sylvester, Tompkins said, Stockley drove to a Soda Pop Stop store near Ty Ty and held it up at about 2:45 p.m., then drove to Moree’s Store at the Dougherty-Worth County line and held it up.

An alert deputy, Lenny Davis, spotted the Impala and pursued it. Shockley got out of the Impala and started to run. Davis, unsure if the driver was armed, drew his gun and ordered him to stop.

Davis cuffed Shockley and arrested him. He is now in the Worth County Jail.
