ALBANY -- Westover left little doubt which was the best cross country program in Region 1-AAA on Thursday with a dominating performance in the region meet.
Led by region champion Ericka Taylor -- who is also the reigning GHSA Class AAA state champ and Herald Player of the Year -- the Lady Patriots edged Monroe for first place in the girls meet, while the Westover boys ran away to a huge victory against the rest of the field.
The top five teams in the boys meet were Westover (23 points), Cairo (71), Monroe (73), Worth County (76), Americus-Sumter (126).
Worth County's Dale Tate was the region champion with a time of 17:10, followed by Westover's Jeremy Bonner, Westover's Kentavious Harris, Cairo's Devan Hill, Westover's Quenterrious Ousley, Westover's Tevin Mack, Westover's Jack Plowden, Americus-Sumter's Eric Fletcher, Westover's Tucker Greenfield and Cairo's Alexander Flowers.
The top five girls teams were Westover (26), Monroe (37), Crisp County (98), Cairo (108) and Americus-Sumter (112).
Taylor's first-place time of 20:29 was better than the rest of the field by 42 seconds. Following Taylor were Monroe's Davone Anduze, Crisp's Rodreaka Cambliss, Westover's Toiannah Campbell, Monroe's Akeema Miller, Westover's Asia Bell, Westover's Chiarra Palazzolo, Westover's Elizabeth Brown, Monroe's Brandy Bynum and Dougherty's Quannesha Gatling.
