LEESBURG -- A Lee County High School student's portrayal of a terminally ill teenager earned her a top acting award in the region high school one-act play compeition last week.

Palladium Players performer Amelia Maxfield was named best actress in the region at the Region 1-AAAA one-act play contest Thuresday in Warner Robins. Maxfield portrayed Star, a terminally ill teen with an inspiring disposition, in the troupe's production of Cherie Bennett's "John Lennon and Me."

Caleb Pines was named to the All-Region cast for his portrayal of Jeff, Star's confidant and love interest. Both Maxfield and Pines are seniors at LCHS and plan to pursue the theater arts at the college level.

The production of "John Lennon and Me" placed fourth in the intensely competitive region contest, receiving one second-place vote and two fourth-place votes from the three adjudicators. "John Lennon and Me" was the only drama to finish in the top four, with the other top spots all going to musical productions from schools in Houston County. In its 20-year history, the Paladium Players has never placed outside the top four in region competition.

Also in the Lee High cast were Megan Lisenby, Taylor Spriggle, Austin Brann, Davis Cowart, Demi Davis, Becky Jo Baltenberger, Garrett Odom and Jessi Robison.

All the performers are members of the International Thespian Society -- the high school theater honor society. The production managers for "John Lennon and Me" were Jeremy Munnings, Malarie Warren and Tiffani Miller. The play's director, Dotty Davis, was assisted by Andrew Miller.

Well, it is a pleasure to read about high school students that should be congratulated rather than incarcerated. I don't think these kids will be a future problem for society.

Oh, I do hope LCHS will offer a repeat performance of this award-winning production. Please?
