‘Courageous’ producers hope to influence Hollywood

ALBANY, Ga. — With the screening season for “Courageous” officially over, the people at Sherwood Pictures are now looking toward the release of their fourth film venture.

The film “Courageous” centers around a group of law enforcement officers who, after tragedy strikes, resolve to be better fathers, husbands and leaders.

The film is still on track for a Sept. 30 release, at which time it will open in more than 1,000 theaters — roughly the same number as its predecessor, “Fireproof,” which was released in 2008. The movie will open in theaters throughout the United States including Albany, Guam, Alaska, Hawaii and Maine.

There will even be showings in Canada on opening day.

“That’s actually new. We’ve never opened in Canada before,” said Kris Fuhr, who is spearheading the film’s marketing campaign. “It’s everywhere.”

There will be an average of four showings per theater, which means there will be roughly 4,000 audiences watching “Courageous” on opening day. Some circuits will have special showings on Sept. 29, as well as midnight showings, Fuhr said.

On Aug. 26, a special red carpet event was held at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, which drew more than 3,000 people.

“It was a very exciting event,” Fuhr said. “People were laughing, crying and connecting to the message of ‘Courageous.’”

While a good deal of positive feedback has come from the screenings, Fuhr said gaining input is not the primary objective behind conducting them.

“We are looking to share the movie with others so they can see how they can use it in their ministries,” she said. “Our greatest hope with these movies is that they (promote) a powerful message.”

Officials are hoping to affirm to fellow filmmakers that some movies — such as the ones being produced by Sherwood — are beginning to reveal a market that appreciates films that “do not always have to push the envelope to be successful.”

“We hope this movie shows that this is a great market for positive movies for the family,” Fuhr said. “With the success of ‘Fireproof,’ Hollywood now knows there is an audience for these movies.

“We set out to make amazing, entertaining stories that have a positive message.”

The film is being directed by Alex Kendrick, who also stars in the movie. The producer is his brother, Stephen Kendrick. Mark Willard did the musical score.

Sherwood’s “Fireproof” became the top independent film of the year in 2008. The project, which took $500,000 to produce, did $6.8 million in ticket sales its first weekend. In all, it made a $33 million profit.

“’Fireproof’ was a success, and we hope to achieve that same success (with ‘Courageous’),” Fuhr said.

The other films made by Sherwood Pictures are “Facing the Giants” (2006) and “Flywheel” (2004).

Showtimes and tickets for “Courageous” are now available through Fandango. According to Fandango, “Courageous” is rated PG-13 for “some violence and drug content.”

The first showing in Albany will begin at noon on Sept. 30, followed by showings at 3 p.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. later that day.

I don't know why a church has to make a movie with a PG-13 rating. I rather watch a movie like Seven Days In Utopia with a positive message too but a G rating. And why do the pastors insist or "starring" in the movie?
