Commission asks for special election to fill seat

ALBANY, Ga. — The Albany City Commission has voted to ask the Dougherty County Board of Elections to call a special election to fill the seat vacated by Commissioner Dorothy Hubbard.

Under Georgia law, Hubbard was forced to resign her seat when she qualified to run for mayor last week.

Tuesday, the commission voted 6-0 with Mayor Willie Adams absent, to ask the elections board to call the election.

The board of elections, in turn, has called a special meeting at 4 p.m. today in room 120 of the Government Center to hear a presentation from City Attorney Nathan Davis about the commission’s desire to fill the seat.

While no action by the elections board has been taken, elections officials have said that the board will likely call the special election on the same date as the November General Election, effectively adding the Ward II seat to the ballot with the rest of the municipal elections.

If that’s the case, qualifying for the special election would be set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14, and Thursday, September 15, and 9 a.m. to noon on Sept.16.

Current Albany Mayor Willie Adams is retiring when his term expires later this year.
