Former Westover Rashad Greene could be in the starting lineup as a freshman for the Seminoles this weekend after suspensions to two of his teammates.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State football coach Jimbo Fisher suspended starting cornerback Greg Reid and reserve linebacker Telvin Smith for Saturday's game between the No. 5 Seminoles and Charleston Southern because of violations of team rules.
Fisher did not elaborate on their suspension.
Reid is a junior who had 65 tackles and three interceptions last season. He started at cornerback in the season-opening win over Louisiana-Monroe and had three tackles.
He is also the team's punt returner who led the NCAA in punt return yards last season. It is expected that either Bert Reed or former Westover star Rashad Greene, a freshman, will step into that role. Greene, who left Westover after his sophomore season and moved to South Florida, where he enrolled at national powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas, not only caught his first collegiate pass Saturday against ULM, but it went for a touchdown.
Smith, who had 18 tackles last season, had four tackles against ULM.
NOTRE DAME BENCHES CRIST FOR REES: Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly made a change Tuesday at quarterback, saying Tommy Rees will be the starting quarterback for Saturday night's game at Michigan.
Kelly announced the decision Tuesday and said it was based on production. He benched Dayne Crist in Saturday's lackluster 23-20 loss to South Florida in the season-opener and Rees played well in the second half. Rees went 4-0 as a starter for the Irish last season. Kelly had picked Crist as his starter just two weeks ago.
