Insurance company suing Albany woman for apartment fire

Constance Huff's family was one of eight that was displaced by a fire in January 2010.

— Insurance officials are suing an Albany woman for more than $384,000 in damages from a January 2010 fire at an Albany apartment complex.

According to documents filed in state court in Dougherty County, State Farm Fire and Casualty Insurance company is suing Constance Hunt for more than $384,000, claiming that she set the fire that ultimately displaced her family and seven other families back in January 2010.

Those documents state that, according to State Farm, Hunt "negligently started a fire that resulting in damage" to apartments insured by the company.

Hunt, in court documents, denies that she had anything to do with the cause of the fire. At the scene, Hunt told reporters that she had no idea how the fire had started.

"It started in my apartment, but I haven't a clue how it did," said Hunt, 25. "All I know is I was in the living room when big fat smoke came in, flames were at the windows. I grabbed my children and got out."

At the scene of the fire on South Madison Street January 13, 2010, Albany Firefighters told reporters that initial indications were that the fire started because of an electrical short and appeared to be accidental in nature.

Still, State Farm contends in its court filings that it paid out $384,216 to the owners of the apartment complex to cover the cost of the damage and has claim to be repaid.

A non-jury trial has been set on the matter for November 2, at 2 p.m. in state court.

This is a waste of money in Albany, GA. Why did they not sue the woman who use to have a sizable estate for smoking in bed? Of course the woman died, but her family use to be worth millions.

I THOUGHT INSURANCE "WAS" FOR ACCIDENTAL INCIDENTS. IF IT WERE INTENTIONAL YOU GET PROSECUTED. THIS IS GOING TO BE THE NEW TREND. YOU HAVE TO HAVE INSURANCE, BUT THEY DON'T HAVE TO PAY. ALLSTATE WAS REAL GOOD AT THAT DECADES AGO.
