Riddle out as Albany tourism head; Chamber exec steps in

The Convention and Visitors Bureau is in charge of promoting tourism in the Albany area.

— The head of Albany tourism is no longer employed by the Albany Convention and Visitors Bureau, chamber officials say.

In an e-mail to board members and staff of the Albany-Area Chamber of Commerce, Chamber President Catherine Glover said she would be assuming Lisa Riddle's responsibilities and that business at the CVB would remain "on track."

While the CVB falls under the command and control of the chamber, it is almost entirely funded through revenues generated by the motel/hotel tax, which it shares with the city of Albany.

As a follow up response to a request for additional information by the Herald, Glover issued the following statement:

"Lisa's last day with the CVB was September 8. We have not decided whether or not we will replace the position as it is stands, but will take all the time necessary to revisit the duties associated with the position, and will work internally to realign and reassign as best fits the mission of the organization," Glover said. "It's important to note that my role with the Chamber/CVB has been and will continue to be as President/CEO of both organizations. When I was hired three years ago, I was hired due to my extensive Chamber, CVB and statewide tourism experience."

"My involvement with the CVB has been substantial, and will continue to be. We have a very strong team in place, and will continue to meet and exceed expectations as our visitors, trade organizations and business conferences continue to enjoy all that Albany has to offer," Glover said.

Leadership Albany

Former CVB Executive Director Lisa Riddle.

When contacted Friday morning, Riddle said she had been advised to consult with an attorney and that she would decline making any public statements until she's had an opportunity to do so.

As head of the CVB, Riddle and her staff are tasked with promoting the city and county's various attractions and putting "heads in beds" at local motels and hotels.

The group works annually with the downtown merchants association and the city to host the Rock, Roll and Run weekend which has become Albany's signature event, with thousands coming downtown for that weekends three events -- the Mardis Gras street party, the marathon and bike race.

They have also taken on a partnership role with Flint Fest, the event forged through the combination of the Riverjam concert series and the International Festival. This year, Flint Fest is set for October 1, downtown at Riverfront Park.

During Riddle's tenure, the CVB has helped the city gain the designation of being a camera-ready community, making it easier for filmmakers to use the city as a backdrop for their feature films as Disney did earlier this year when they shot scenes for the Odd Life of Timothy Green here.

The CVB also has become one of only three CVB's across the state to have earned the Gold Level Benchmark of Certification from the Georgia Convention and Visitors Bureau.

I think this is a huge mistake for the CVB and Albany, Lisa Riddle was a huge assett and she and her staff made alot of good things happen. I don't think it will take long to see the mistake that has been made.

Ok,not sure who this Glover lady is...maybe it's because Lisa Riddle's face and name is the one ALWAYS associated with special things happening in Albany. No one knows the other name.So lets's see how well "she" can run the place. So sorry Albany for "this person" ruining Albany's future hopes..

Hello... Riddle can coordinate the Albany Marathon with her eyes CLOSED. It is one of ALBANY'S Largest Success in many years... RIDDLE is irreplaceable, it will take 10 people to do all the work she did daily for our community and the hospitality industry in Albany.

I totally agree with all the comments! I don't know what's going on, but Lisa IS the CVB. The Snickers Marathon .. Mardi Gras... she has done an excelelnt job and this really makes no sense at all!

I have seen how dedicated and how hard Riddle works for the CVB first hand! She puts her work ahead of everything else! Cant wait to see the Mardi Gras and Marathon completely FLOP this year!! A great loss for the Good Life City!

dino, yes Lisa is a great lost for the CVB and the City, however, there are many others working on the 2012 Marathon and Mardi Gras and do not deserve your comment about these events being a complete FLOP this year!!!

This is the biggest mistake that president has made since her arrival to Albany, no one is as committed to Albany as Lisa Riddle, she was proud to represent Albany and did a fantastic job. Ms. Glover needs to go back to where she came from, useless, useless waste...

I was just about to register myself and a co-worker for the Albany Marathon, when I just read this story. Now we will be seriously reconsidering finding another Marathon to take part in, without Lisa heading this operation. I am not gonna drive 9.5 hrs from Shreveport to take part in a Marathon that is now very likely to have issues. Albany.............. a town that will never break the chains that keep it from garnering success.

Look folks, Riddle couldn't even calculate 'economic impact' correctly. As for Ms. Glover, she's also been a disappointing failure. Albany needs better people in both jobs.

Mrs. Glover has had enough time. Perhaps it's time she move on to a community that doesn't have to sneak into its citizen's back pocket to pay her bloated salary.
