Event to push cancer research

ALBANY, Ga. -- People in the Albany area are being asked to take part in a life-saving celebration Sept. 20 as the American Cancer Society marks the 10th year of its Celebrate With Action program.

Communities across the nation are hosting events that allow families touched by cancer to tell their legislators how vital funding is to cancer research. Albany is one of around 20 Georgia communities selected to participate in this year's ACS Celebrate With Action activity.

"With budget cuts expected, funding for cancer research is on the chopping block this year," Ella Campbell, the 2nd Congressional District nominee to lead the local ACS CAN effort, said. "On the 10th anniversary of Celebrate With Action, we want to impress upon our government leaders how important it is that this funding remain available."

Campbell and other American Cancer Society volunteers will have a Celebrate With Action banner at the State Theatre -- 313 Pine Ave. downtown -- on Sept. 20 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., and they're asking local citizens whose lives have been touched by cancer to come by and sign the banner.

Campbell will take the banner to the nation's capital on Sept. 26 as part of a nationwide reminder of how crucial cancer research funding is.

"We're asking people to sign their names and maybe include a short personal note about the impact cancer treatment has had on their lives," she said. "It can be something like 'Because I was treated for cancer, I was able to see my daughter graduate ...' or something similar. Or they can just sign their names.

"I've set a challenge to get at least 200 signatures on our banner. There will also be a journal available that people can sign. Those pages can be torn out and sent as postcards. We plan to mail those to our congressmen."

The local event will include brief comments from a local cancer physician, caregiver, researcher and survivor.
