Two emerge to fill Hubbard's seat

Ivey Hines and Melissa Strothers plan to qualify this week for the seat vacated by Commissioner Dorothy Hubbard

ALBANY, Ga. — With Ward II Commissioner Dorothy Hubbard forced by state law to vacate her seat to run for mayor, two people announced Monday that they are interested in replacing her on the board.

Ivey Hines and Melissa Strother are the first to state their intentions to qualify later this week for Hubbard’s former seat.

Hines announced his candidacy in front of the Government Center on Monday morning. According to a news release received Monday afternoon, Strother plans to officially announce her plans today.

A 58-year-old pastor and employee at Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany, Hines’ campaign would be his first involvement in local politics.

Strother, an Albany native, Auburn graduate and owner of M.B. Strother Designs, also is taking her first dip into Albany’s political waters.

In her news release, Strother says she supports a “safer Ward II,” and would support advances in infrastructure and commerce and a better view of the river from the east side.

The qualifying period for the seat officially begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday and will continue until Friday at noon.

The Georgia Constitution forbids anyone at the county or municipal level from running for an office at that same level and while simultaneously holding office.

Last week, the Albany City Commission held a called meeting to pass a resolution requesting that the Dougherty County Board of Elections call a special election to fill the seat.

The next day, the Board of Elections set the special election for Nov. 8 — the same day as the general election — and set qualifying for this week.

By law, elections officials must have at least two and one-half days of qualifying before setting the ballot.

Only residents of Ward II — which covers parts of northeast and north central Albany — will be able to vote for Hubbard’s replacement.
