ALBANY -- The funeral service of Charles Franklin Luttrell, 76, who went to be with the Lord on September 12, 2011, will be conducted, Thursday, September 15, 2011 at `11:00AM at Avalon United Methodist Church .Rev. Dr. James Bullion and Rev. Dennis Lanning will officiate with interment to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Charles was born on December 16, 1934 in Columbus, GA, where he grew up. He sang in school choruses and played in school bands throughout junior high and highschool. He continued with his musical interests in college, receiving a music scholarship to Florida State University. He was a member of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity and graduated from FSU with a Bachelor of Music Education.
After graduation, Charles taught chorus and band for twenty five years in multiple schools in Apopka, FL, Americus, GA, Columbus, GA, Eastman, GA and Albany, GA. Over a professional career of fifty years he also served as choir director of several church choirs in Bainbridge, GA, Americus, GA, Columbus, GA, Waverly Hall, GA, Laurel, MS and finally Albany, GA. He was active in community choruses and bands including the Bob Barr Community Band in Columbus, GA and was for many years active in the Darton Community band, where he played baritone and the Albany Chorale, in which he sang bass. Loving the barbershop quartet sound, he started "The Shamrocks" which he performed at several events around Albany in recent years. He was a talented musician, arranging music for his church choirs, vocal and brass ensembles and his barbershop quartet.
Charles was a long-time member of Avalon United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Beauford E. Luttrell, Sr. and Ruth Whitten Luttrell of Columbus, GA. He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty six years, Carolyn Luttrell, three daughters, Debbie Syfrett and her husband, Stephen, Janice Lesley and her husband, Nathan and Donna Dean and her husband, Tommy, five grandchildren, Lisa Daniel, Jessica Burnett, Joshua Burnett, Rebecca Holton and Kevin Holton, three great grandchildren, Alyssa Herren, Aaliyah Herren and Savannah Burnett, one brother, Beauford E. (Mickey) Luttrell, Jr. and his wife, Peggy, two nieces, Susan Scott and Sheri Luttrell.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 14, 2011 from 7:00-8:30 PM at Kimbrell-Stern Funeral Directors.
