BLAKELY -- Mr. Raymond C. Singletary, Jr., 99, of Blakely, Ga. died early Thursday morning at Pioneer Community Hosptial of Early in Blakely, Ga. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011 at 3 PM at the First United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Blakely Cemetery. Rev. Rick Turner and Rev. Dwight Bishop officiating. The family will receive friends in the church social hall from 1 PM till funeral time.
Mr. Singletary was born March 26, 1912 to the late Raymond Cook Singletary, Sr. and Emma Quillian Singletary. He is preceded in death by 2 sons; Marvin Sparks Singletary and Raymond Clifford Singletary and by his wife Margaret Sparks Singletary; a brother, A.J. Singletary and a sister, Alice S. Dunn.
He was a member of the Blakely Peanut Company (President 1944-1978 and Chairman of the Board 1944-1985). A Partner in Singletary Farms, Bank of Early President from 1944-1972, Chairman of the Bank of Early Board from 1944 to 1994 and remained on the board. Member of the First United Methodist Church where he is a member and past chairman of the board, A Mason and Shriner, Member of the Presidential Commission of the World Hunger from 1979 to 1980, Member of Blakely Rotary Club from 1932 to 2011 and Past President; He received the Four Avenues of Service Award in 2009; it is the highest award given by the Rotary Club.. He was Supervisor Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District from 1944 to 1971; Supervisor emeritus from 1977 to 2011. Member of the National Peanut Council and served as Chairman of the Peanut Council in 1966; President of the Southwestern Peanut Association. Director Emeritus of Blakely , Early County Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by a daughter, Anne S. Hammack and husband Albert of Dalton, Ga. ; a daughter-in-law: Henrietta Singletary of Albany, Ga. a sister: Emily S. Garner of Milledgeville, Ga. and by 5 Grandchildren: James Albert Hammack, III and wife Elizabeth of Atlanta, Ga; Margaret H. Long and husband Jason of Atlanta, Ga; McArthur Singletary and Duncan Singletary both of St. Simmons Island, Fl. and Raymond Singletary of Atlanta, Ga.; 2 Great-Grandchildren : James Albert Hammack, IV and Mary Moore Hammack of Atlanta, Ga. And by four special care givers; Gloria Smith, Cornelia Holley, Bertha Bush and Nadine Wiggins.
Serving as active pallbearers will be James Albert Hammack, III, McArthur Singletary, Duncan Singletary, Raymond Singletary, Jason Long, Steve Singletary, Margaret H. Long and Elizabeth M. Hammack. Honorary pallbearers will be the Board of Directors of the Bank of Early and One SouthBank and the Blakely Rotary Club.
