SMITHVILLE, Ga. — Girls from newborns to 18-year-olds are being urged to show off their “natural beauty” and help Smithville celebrate its annual Chicken Pie Festival by taking part in the third Miss Smithville Blue Jean Pageant on Oct. 22.
The pageant is a preliminary event leading up to the Oct. 29 festival held downtown.
“We had 36 kids enter the pageant last year, and they had an absolute ball,” pageant co-coordinator Carol Gosa said. “There’s no pressure on the girls; they don’t have to perform or speak. They just walk out on the stage and show off their natural beauty.
“We emphasize fun at the Blue Jean Pageant. We had a little 4-year-old grab one of the tiaras (awarded to winners) and take off one year. We think that’s fun. This is definitely not like ‘Toddlers and Tiaras.’”
All contestants will wear white shirts and blue jeans and be judged, in various age groups, on their natural beauty and personality. There will also be competition in three optional categories: prettiest hair, prettiest smile and most beautiful overall. Contestants who choose to compete in the optional categories will compete in two age groups: birth-9 and 10-18.
Participants in the pageant will be asked to ride a float in the Chicken Pie Festival the following week.
