Darton men's soccer coach Bart Sasnett and his guys are now the second-ranked team in the nation.

ALBANY -- Following a tied-up first half, the Darton men's soccer team fought for two more goals in a grueling match with Broward College on Saturday to win, 3-1.

It was hot, and tempers flared. Questionable officiating combined with those elements to make for a battle where there were several cheap shots committed -- even after plays were stopped -- and a number of athletes-turned-actors took dives on the field.

A Diego Ramos goal, assisted by Guilherme Frota, was the only Cavalier goal of the first half, and Ramos assisted JoWayne Laidley for Darton's second goal.

Javier Anor scored Darton's third goal on an assist from Ramos.

"(Broward was) a very physical team that stayed in the match the entire time and never gave up," Darton coach Bart Sasnett said.

The Cavaliers are 8-1 overall and 5-0 in Georgia College Athletics Association play. The team is ranked No. 2 in the National Junior College Athletics Association.

Today the Cavs will face conference-rival South Georgia College, whom Sasnett describes as the toughest team they've played so far.

Darton beat South Georgia College, 3-1, in Douglas earlier this season.

"I'm expecting a war," Sasnett said.

CROSS COUNTRY AT FSU: Although the hot, humid air apparently caused three of Darton cross country coach Bruce Skiles' men to collapse while competing in the Florida State Cross Country Invitational on Friday, he still says his teams ran strongly.

"It was miserable," Skiles said. "It was so hot and the humidity was so high - it was in the afternoon, in the heat of the day - it probably caused our guys to run 10 to 15 seconds slower per mile.

"But they still ran tough. Two of my guys fell out right after they crossed the finish line."

Sophomore Kingsley Cajuste again lead the way for the Cavaliers, running a 27:08 to finish 34th out of 157 runners. Darton finished 10th overall out of the 17-team field, beating Valdosta State University, Troy University and its GCAA rivals South Georgia College and Chattahooccee Technical College.

Sha Wright, of Griffin, led the Lady Cavs to a 14th-place finish among 17 teams. She finished the women's 5K in 20:50 and finished 74th overall out of 162 athletes.
