ALBANY — The Darton College baseball team improved to a Region XVII-best 14-1 on Sunday after a pair of wins against neighboring rival Andrew College. The No. 12 nationally ranked Cavs (27-18 overall) edged the Tigers, 3-2, in Game 1, then rolled in Game 2, 12-1, to push their lead to 3 1/2 games over second-place Middle Georgia in the conference standings.
Tyler Oglesby earned the win in the opener, going seven innings, striking out one and allowing just three hits. Darton went up, 2-0, in the first inning, but then Andrew came back and tied it at 2-2 in the second. What ended up being the game-winning hit came from Tripp Calhoun in the third inning when his sac fly brought home Kevin Manos.
Evan Carr led at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Parker Nix went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Manos added to his NJCAA-leading RBI total with another one Sunday, while Jeremy Burns led Andrew, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
In the nightcap, A.J. Sundstrom picked up the win for Darton, going five innings, allowing one run and giving up just four hits while striking out three.
Michael Aker and Steven Williams then came on and each pitched an inning of scoreless ball.
Cody Wofford finished 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored for Darton, and Calhoun was 2-for-3 with two RBI, two RBI and a run scored. Casey James was also 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, and Davis Knapp was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
The two teams finish off the series today in Cuthbert.
ASU CRUSHES LEMOYNE-OWEN, 22-8: Highlighted by a William Smalls grand slam in the third inning, the Rams improved to 11-15 overall and 7-5 in conference play Sunday as Ken Nesbitt picked up the win after going six innings.
Albany State returns to action Wednesday at Columbus State.
