A body was found at 1800 block of West Town Road at 12:41 p.m. April 4, 2012.

ALBANY, Ga. — A man searching for scrap metal found the nude body of a man in the woods near a dirt road off Westtown Road Wednesday, according to Albany police Department officials.

“We got a phone call from a passerby at 12:41 p.m.,” said Phyllis Banks, police spokeswoman. “The cause of death is under investigation. I can confirm there was an injury to the head.”

Law enforcement scrambled to the scene, called out the Georgia State Patrol helicopter for aerial photographs and had ATVs searching the area around the woods.

Because the body was found face down, the gender was not immediately visible leading to an original gender misidentification as a female, Banks said. Once crime technicians completed initial examination the body was turned over and identified as male.

“It did not look decomposed,” Banks said.

The body was taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation lab in Macon to be identified and examined for cause of death and any possible sexual assault.

Cain Williams, a manager at Flint River Services with land that backs onto the area where the body was found, walked up to police at the scene. He came to tell them about a green GMC pickup one of his employees saw near the woods at about 5 p.m. Tuesday.

“People go back there all the time. They dump trash back there,” Williams said. “There are mattresses back there. You wouldn’t believe the things you see back there.”
