SYLVESTER -- Mrs. Glenda M. Gammage, 88, of Sylvester died Sunday, April 8, 2012 at Phoebe Worth Medical Center.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at the First Baptist Church with interment to follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery. Dr. Ben Bush will officiate.
Born January 20, 1924, in Rome, GA to Dr. Samuel Robert and Mildred King Methvin, she grew up in Lindale, GA and had made her home in Sylvester since 1942. Mrs. Gammage was a member of First Baptist Church and former Sunday School Teacher. Her love of flowers was evident as a charter member of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club, as a former National Flower Show Judge, and owner of the Quail's Nest Florist and Gifts. In her early years, she enjoyed being a Cub Scout and Girl Scout Leader. Later in life, she was a devoted "Pink Lady" volunteer at Phoebe Worth Medical Center. She was blessed with many talents in cooking, sewing and painting, but these were all superseded by her great love and care for her family, the Lord and people or animals in need. She truly never rested and was a caregiver to all.
Survivors include her daughters, Mary King Givens and Lila (Jim) Phelps of Sylvester, and Deirdre (Philip) Troyer of Bradenton, Florida; five grandchildren, Jamie (Jonathan) Judy of Statesboro, GA, Sam Phelps of Sylvester, Mary Van Jeffords of Tallahassee, Florida, Julia (Edward) Florack of San Angelo, TX, and William Troyer of Bradenton, FL; a sister-in-law, Jessie Gammage of Columbus, GA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, D.L. Gammage, Jr., son, Samuel Methvin Gammage, and son-in-law, James R. Givens, M.D.
The family will receive friends Monday, April 9, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Banks Funeral Home.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 309, Sylvester, GA, 31791, Margaret Jones Public Library, 205 Pope Street, Sylvester, GA, 31791, or Best Friends Humane Society P.O.BOX 5894, Sylvester, Ga., 31791.
