PREP ROUNDUP: DWS picks up two wins; Lee County sweeps Bainbridge

ST. SIMONS ISLAND — Deerfield-Windsor stayed hot during spring break by picking up two wins in the Spring Break Classic at Frederica High on St. Simons Island.

The Knights came back from a 4-1 deficit to beat Gatewood, 7-4, on Friday and then beat Piedmont Academy, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon.

Austin Murphy went the distance against Piedmont to improve to 4-0. He gave up one run on three hits while striking out five. Matthew Fox went 2-for-3 and drove in a run, and Harrison Webb had an RBI single. Johnny Croley scored the other run on a wild pitch.

Croley picked up the win in relief against Gatewood, tossing three scoreless innings and allowing only one hit. He struck out three and improved to 3-1 for the season.

The Knights erupted with a six-run inning to take the lead in the sixth. Weston King had two hits and an RBI. Davis Hines and Webb each drove in a run in the sixth and Lindsay Short delivered a key two-run single in the comeback.

The Knights are now 11-3 and next will play Calvary at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at DWS.

BAINBRIDGE — Lee County’s baseball team took a pair of game from Bainbridge on Friday night. Daniel Nichols hit his eighth homer of the season and went 4-for-4 with three RBI, and Jack Bell had a two-run double to lead Lee County to a 10-7 win in the opener. Jess Posey (4-0) got the win, going four innings and strking out five while giving up four hits and four runs.

Freshman Matt Hatcher had another classic outing in the nightcap, throwing five no-hit innings before being relieved in a 3-1 win. Hatcher, who struck out five and walked four is now 2-1 with a save. Chris Mosley pitched the final two innings for Lee.

Matt Mears had a three-run double for the Trojans, who are now 12-5 and 6-2 in Region 1-AAAA. Bainbridge starter Jordan Massey struck out 12 over six innings but took the loss.
