Downtown Albany farm market to return

ALBANY, Ga. — A farmer’s market that brought thousands downtown to shop for fresh vegetables and fruit last year will return in late May, organizers said this week.

David Milliner, of the Southwest Georgia Community Food Alliance, told Dougherty County commissioners that the Albany market will start on May 26 and run for 30 consecutive Saturdays, wrapping up on Dec. 15.

“Things are going to be bigger and better,” Milliner said. “We’re going to have the event for more days and hope to have even more people participating.”

This year, 27 different Southwest Georgia counties are participating in farm markets around the region.

Baker County has already launched theirs, while Sylvester is planning to start one May 5. In Tifton, a farmer’s market will open May 19.

“It’s a good opportunity for people to support local farmers while getting fresh fruit and vegetables that are healthy for them and their families,” Milliner said.

Dougherty County Administrator Richard Crowdis praised Milliner and his group for running a great event last year.

“We didnt’ receive one complaint the entire time and I think that the credit for that goes to Mr. Milliner and his organization,” Crowdis said.

In order to operate as it has in the past, the group needs permission from the commission to use the parking deck next to the Government Center, which is why Milliner was before the commission Monday.
