ALBANY -- Dr. James Alvin Hubbard, Sr. of Albany died April 6, 2012 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held April 14, 2012 at 1 p.m. from Mount Zion Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held April 13, 2012 at Bethel AME Church from 6 to 8 p.m.
Dr. Hubbard was the third of six children born to William Standifer Hubbard and Senella Pittman on March 20, 1939. He was known as "Son" to family and friends in the area. He was educated in the public schools of Early County in Blakely. In 1956 he graduated as class valedictorian of Washington High School and won scholarships to Dillard University in New Orleans, LA where he was an honor student and a member of Beta Kappa Chi Honorary Society. In 1958 he was inducted into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
He graduated from Dillard in 1960 and was accepted into Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN where he graduated with honors in 1964. He met and married his first wife Brenda Joyce Hopkins and they had their first child, Angela Robin, in December of 1964. He interned at Detroit Receiving Hospital and out of an internship class of 56, he was ranked as "5".
After completing his internship he accepted a residency at Crittenden General Hospital from 1964 to 1968. He served at the Naval Hospital in St. Albans, NY as the staff Ob-GYN where he achieved a Lieutenant Commander LCDR Rank. He remained at the hospital until June 30, 1970. After being discharged he moved and set up his practice in Albany.
He along with Dr. Carl Gordon and Dr. Edgar Parker built Gohupad Clinic. This building house Ob-GYN, Dental, and Surgery practices. He and his wife Brenda had their second child, James Alvin, Jr. in March of 1973. James Jr. was delivered by his father. He was the Chief of OB at Phoebe Putney Hospital for two terms and he opened the C-Section operating room OB suite.
Brenda Hubbard passed away on January 29, 1994. He married Debra Coffman in 1996. He practiced medicine from 1971 to 2000 when he retired due to health reasons. During his tenure he delivered over 7000 babies and performed over 1000 C-Sections; he never lost a mother or her infant during these processes.
Survivors include his wife, Debra Hubbard of Albany; a daughter, Angela H. (Daemon) Woods of Memphis, TN; a son, James Alvin (Sherrie) Hubbard, Jr. of Albany; two sisters, Annette Hubbard of Roselle, NJ and Lois Jones of Newark, NJ; one aunt, Rommie Hubbard of Albany; five grandchildren, Juwuan, Jaden, Joi, Jason, and Rebecca. Three siblings preceded him in death, William Hubbard, Jeanette Hubbard, and Shirley Hubbard. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and many sorrowing friends.
