AMERICUS, Ga. - Officials from the Sumter County Sheriff's Office have confirmed that an inmate at the Sumter County Jail has died in custody.
A news release from the sheriff's office says that a female inmate at the jail was found unresponsive at 11 a.m. Monday. She was transported by ambulance to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus.
The release did not elaborate on the suspected cause of death.
The identity of the inmate was being withheld Monday afternoon pending notification of next of kin. The investigation is being handled by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 3 office.
