Two suspects apprehended in scrap metal theft case

ALBANY, Ga. — Dougherty County Police Department officials reported that a man and a woman were arrested after Tuesday evening on charges of stealing scrap metal from a yard at 400 Dunbar Lane.

Deborah Elizabeth White, 47, and William Joseph Butler, 26, were arrested for criminal trespass and theft by taking, a Dougherty County Jail spokeswoman said. White was also charged with receiving stolen property, a license plate.

While attempting to steal $48 worth of scrap metal from behind the Cumulus Broadcasting building, the duo left a silver 2001 Chevrolet Blazer parked in front, said county police Capt. Jimmy Sexton.

After running the license plate through the system, police knew the plate was stolen in Leesburg, Sexton said. That allowed for a search of the Blazer where police found identification cards for White and Butler, he added.

According to reports, a Lee County sheriff’s deputy noticed a woman and a male walking on North Jefferson Street near the area. The county officer arrived and brought them back to the scene. A witness identified the man as Butler and the couple was taken to jail.
