ALBANY, Ga. — For the first time in nearly four years, Dougherty County will soon have someone to head up its 4-H program, officials say.
The dean of the University of Georgia’s College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences has approved a move by local officials to fill the void left by longtime 4-H agent Anthony Jones, who retired in 2009, Extension Agent James Morgan says.
“We’ve received approval from the dean’s office to advertise for the position,” Morgan said. “Hopefully, we’ll have the position filled by July 1 or August 1.”
4-H is one of the state’s most popular organizations for youth development and boasts a statewide enrollment of nearly 200,000 youth.
According to the 4-H website, the mission of Georgia 4-H is to “assist youth in acquiring knowledge, developing life skills, and forming attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, productive and contributing members of society.”
Morgan says the organization is as much about character building and development of interpersonal relationships as it is about agricultural programs.
“Overall, it’s an educational program that also teaches character building and life skills,” Morgan says.
The 4-H agent’s role will be to develop the various program areas emphasized by Georgia 4-H, orchestrate in-school club meetings, help with district projects and facilitate summer camps and events.

I am so glad that they will be filling this position again! 4-H was a huge part of my life growing up! I wouldn't be who I am today without Mr. Jones and Mrs. Green during my Elementary and High School years.
