LEESBURG — Lee County came back from a 7-0 deficit Monday to beat Houston County, 9-8, and is in position to win the Region 1-AAAA title with a pair of wins Friday (at 5 p.m.) against Northside Columbus.
The Trojans (9-2 in the region and 16-7 overall) started the comeback with Daniel Nichols’ 10th homer, a three-run shot in a four-run fourth inning, and scored five more in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Jess Posey, an RBI single from Jack Bell, a two-run single by Jay Howell and a huge RBI single from catcher Steve Edwards, who also threw out a runner trying to steal in the seventh to hold back Houston.
“You have to tip your cap to these kids,’’Lee County coach Rob Williams said. “They don’t know when they’re whipped. They just kept fighting.’’
PERRY — Deerfield Windsor and Sherwood Christian Academy will both send their golf teams to the GISA Class AAA state golf tournament next Monday at the Doublegate County Club.
Deerfield qualified by finishing second in the Region 3-AAA golf tournament on Monday and Sherwood finished third in the five-team field. The top four teams — or any team that shot a 380 or better — advanced to the state tournament.
DWS was led by John Leach, who shot an 81 at the Houston Lakes County Club to finish fourth overall. DWS shot 336 and was second behind Tiftarea (333).
Sherwood shot a 341 to finish ahead of Westfield (350) and Southland (438). SCA was led by Tyler George, who was second with a 79, and Tyler Hanson, who finished fifth at 82.
Gusting winds up to 35 mph blew the scores up on everyone’s team.
“Those were as tough of conditions as I’ve ever seen at a region golf tournament,’’ said longtime DWS athletic director and golf coach Gordy Gruhl. “The wind was brutal.’’
