ALBANY, Ga. — It’s a party. A going-away party for crime and drugs sponsored by the Albany Police Department.
As part of the “National Night Out” event, APD is staging the area in the Albany Civic Center’s parking lot near the amphitheater from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
“We are extending a personal invitation to all citizens to come out and join us,” spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said. “There will be plenty of food, music and games.”
Nationally and locally, the event is a way to cement police and community relations in the fight against crime and illegal drug use.
The movement began with people across the country holding lights-on vigils in their communities. Since 1984, the first Tuesday of August has seen the vigils expand into block parties, festivals and other events to bring neighbors together.
Police at the night out, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, aim to increase community awareness of police programs such as illegal drug prevention, neighborhood watch and other anti-crime efforts.

Today is August 5th. Why is this just posted? If the event has already been held then it hard for us to plan to go after the fact.
