Cancer Coalition accepting grant applications

ALBANY -- The Cancer Coalition of South Georgia is accepting applications for the 2012 Cancer Care Grants cycle.

Officials say the grants are designed to help support area non-profit, community-based health or advocacy organizations that assist patients undergoing cancer treatment.

"Since 2006, our Cancer Care Grants have been vital to our mission. They have created a way to support regional non-profits throughout South Georgia that directly assist cancer patients and their families," said Cancer Coalition CEO Diane Fletcher in a news release.

Grants up to $4,000 are typically awarded to programs that provide cancer patients with medications to manage cancer-related symptoms, cancer-related prostheses, physician recommended or prescribed nutritional support, medical equipment and supplies, transportation for cancer-related medical visits, child care needed for a patient to receive care, treatment location lodging, cost of living assistance and home accessibility or mobility support.

Patients and families served by these funds are required to live in the Cancer Coalition's 32-county service area. Applicants must also not have been funded by the coalition in the last two funding cycles, officials with the organization say.

More than $158,000 has been awarded since the grants were created six years ago. Past recipients include Archbold Medical Center, Mitchell County Food Bank, Lowndes County Partnership Cancer Fund, PinkPals Breast Cancer Support Group, Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Healthcare Advocates of Berrien County, Partnership for LIFE, Tift Regional Medical Center, Grady County Help Agencies, South Georgia Medical Center, Spring Creek Health Cooperative and Southwest Georgia Community Action Council.

Last year, grants of $4,000 each went to Spring Creek Health Cooperative, Southwest Georgia Community Action Council and Grady County Help Agencies. In addition, $2,000 grants were awarded to the region's four cancer centers: Archbold Medical Center, Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, South Georgia Medical Center and Tift Regional Medical Center.

The Cancer Coalition coordinates, facilitates and supports cancer research, outreach, screening, education and prevention. The organization works through partnerships with health care, academic, industry, faith-based, survivor, public health and community service organizations in the area.
