ALBANY, Ga. — One of Albany’s top golf courses is now for sale, officials say.
River Point Golf Club is now listed with broker Hilda Allen, Allen said Tuesday.
The course has been voted as one of Albany’s best by the readers of The Albany Herald in the Reader’s Choice contest that the paper sponsors each year. However, the course has been plagued by financial challenges.
Owner Jos Bekkers had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court hoping to stave off creditors and avoid having the property sold at a tax sale.
Bekkers filed a petition in United States Bankruptcy Court July 3, contending that the golf course had several creditors that it simply could not pay, including the Georgia Department of Revenue, the Dougherty County Tax Department and even more than $14,000 owed for pre-paid wedding deposits.
The biggest single creditor, SB&T, through its parent company Synovus, is owed $1.2 million for the golf course itself. More than $170,000 is owed to a company for golf cart leases and it appears that Bekkers put in $171,000 of his own cash to help operate the course, according to court documents.
According to its website, River Point is an 18-hole, semi-private golf course that was designed in 1995 and has been named the Best Albany-area golf course by the readers of the Albany Herald for the last four years.
The course has been called one of the best in the state by Atlanta Golf Magazine and is the home course to PGA pro Sonny Skinner.
