Squawk of the Day - August 10, 2012

"I am an African-American retiree and recently moved back home to Albany. I find the political situation here disgusting. To vote along racial lines is not only ignorant, but out of sync with progressive cities. To say “they did it to us, now we’re doing it to them” is pathetic."

Seems a bit ironic. A group of people could fight for such a good cause and now resort to this type of behavior. How did Dr. King's inspiring speech go again?

1

KaosinAlbany 2 years, 4 months ago

Yes, I agree. It seems people have forgotten what Dr. King did for Albany. Now we seem to be going backwards in time instead of forward. Sometimes this town is it's own worst enemy.

2

rightasrain 2 years, 4 months ago

I remember very well what King did for this city, as well as others; and it wasn't good, regardless of what many think. King was a hoodlum, not a hero.

1

agirl_25 2 years, 4 months ago

I wasn't here when King was in the city so don't remember him or what he did for the city, be it good or bad, but I don't think he was the hero he was made out to be. I personally think James Farmer, the architect for C.O.R.E., did more for the Civil Rights Movement than King did but that is my opinion and remember I am entitled to it, just as everyone is entitled to their own. I think Farmer was a much more honorable person than King was tho, and again, my opinion. Thanks....Mrs. Dilligaf

The really "pathetic" part of the equation "now we’re doing it to them” is that the "them" they are doing it to are the children. It would all make sense if the ruling cabal on the DCSB had hired a top drawer superintendent and set into motion a sound educational program for children whose only hope in life is education. All of Dougherty County knows they didn't and the results of the controlling cabal's self-serving conduct. Thank you for being honest, squawker.

0

FlunkyMonkey 2 years, 4 months ago

Throw Tommy Postel into the mix with his racist, bigoted comments in regard TO ANYTHING and this gives the rest of the country the idea that Albany is an ignorant, backwards city with a ruling body that is out to protect the ruling body and take care of ALL the citizens; Squawker thank you for putting into words what so many has been thinking for years but just wouldn't say it...and Fryar Tuk, you are right, the ones that is being hurt the most are the children who will need a good education to turn this cesspool around.

What is it going to take to get some Honest Citizens that truely have the Countries interest at heart in Office? Those we seem to have now all seem to be profiting in one way or another from their term in office. Plus we seem to be dumb enough to let them keep doing it to us. If I have to hear one more time about how this or that Politician is benefiting from their position, I think i will certainly doubt the intelligance of all of us.

0

Bubbavet_rureel 2 years, 4 months ago

Politics are nasty and brutal, however, we must learn to trust and respect the decisions of elected officials.

Color really doesn't matter, however, every elected official should be held accountable. Quietly vote them out if they're not doing the job, replace them with someone who reflects the will of the people.

Political moves, if they are legal and constitutional leave them along.

0

waltspecht 2 years, 4 months ago

We shouldn't have to vote them out, the Department of Justice should be getting them an all expense paid vacation in the Federal Pen. Or the State's Attorney General should be getting them State accomodations. To allow what has been going on to continue only assures our eventual ruin.

0

FryarTuk 2 years, 4 months ago

WRONG PREMISE! Politicians must earn the respect and trust of the citizens. The citizens' first responsibility is to be vigilant. As the good book says "Be ye wise as serpents and harmless as doves." It also says, "clutch not serpents to thy breast." The DCSB ruling rogues and #34 are an incestuous nest of vipers. Clutch not serpents to thy breast.

0

tywebb 2 years, 4 months ago

seriously? so when dr. price beats "rev" heard, you're going to be ok with EVERY vote she makes? You're not going to come on here and bash her if she doesn't vote the way you think she should? BULL! And you have some set if you can say, with a straight face, that "color really doesn't matter"! Again....BULL! There's only ONE reason that heard is running now......and by his OWN admission it's NOT because he really wanted to!

1

chinaberry25 2 years, 4 months ago

I agree with you completely. It will take years to turn around, but Atlanta is moving forward. But what you do not understand, folks flock to Albany from somewhere else just to get the entitlement freebies. No questions asked. Why would they want to change? The politicians feed off of this. Sanford Bishop comes around at election time and he will die in office. Look at the ignorant statement made about Dr. Price having the audacity to run Democrat. This is the mentality of this area. Democrats exist for all. Will it ever be gone? Not in Albany.

0

VietVet1 2 years, 4 months ago

Squawker I do hope you find some happiness in your decision to retire here. And I'm sure you'll vote for the best qualified.

0

ustaknow 2 years, 4 months ago

Private sector business is talking on the chin as a result. You may ask; " How? " Well the answer to that is we need a cohesive unit downtown to be able to pass legislation that will be business friendly and that will benefit the whole community in order to draw both new residents and potential business's into Albany. With the racial stuff, such as blatant Postell comments and you might even put Gaines in there, we concerned citizens look at our officials and just think " Wow, maybe time will take care of them because obviously their constituents in their ward do not care enough to vote them out " When we have division it is felt across the board.

Mrs Hubbard,is doing a fine job on many fronts but the commissioners should be either fired , reprimanded or somehow put on notice that we are not going to tolerate it anymore. Then we need to deal with the corrupt school system.

.

She is a liar and a thief. She ran unopposed for the school board. How the he!! do you expect ANYTHING to change when the people of Albany allow this to happen. I wish someone could explain this... But they can't.

0

bigbob 2 years, 4 months ago

The funny thing is they say now we are doing it to them. The dumbies don't seem to realize the city is 80% black so they are doing it to themselves & even worse to their own children. Stupid is as stupid does.

3

agirl_25 2 years, 4 months ago

My husband and I are American retirees who moved back here to Georgia. We were born here in America and lived all over the US, Europe and Southeast Asia because of my husband's career but decided to come back here to retire. We are shocked at the way things are here too, at the political fighting and at the racial tension and the white/black issues. The blacks are just hurting themselves and future generations. You say you are African-American...I suggest you move back to Africa then....or get rid of the label. Start by saying...I am a retiree or I am a black retiree if you really want us to know...who cares what color you are? You will find that as time goes by that label is going to cause more problems from racist little black bigots than you can imagine. OK....... the pot is stirred..let the gripes begin....in 3...2..and 1........

2

willie 2 years, 4 months ago

Go to any city in the USA that is run by a majority all black city council and mayor and you will find that the preachers ar the ones that quietly run things as they dictate the vote. The black preacher in this country today is his own worst enemy.

0

agirl_25 2 years, 4 months ago

Maybe so willie, but how many of the black preachers are truly preachers or just loud mouthed trouble makers spouting out hate? From what I have seen so far the majority are nothing more that trouble makers.

All of the people who took welfare type money, free lunches, and are found to have committed fraud now owe taxes on that money....it is income not welfare. We have a chance of recovering some of the lost money. We cannot expect help from the Feds. The IRS is not interested in small crimes and misdemeanors. The State will help, but mostly it has to be done here within our community. These people took money intended for the most vulnerable and should expect no mercy.

2

RedEric 2 years, 4 months ago

Mr. Retiree, welcome back. I hope you are enjoying retirement...ain't it great! The city and area are beautiful and deserved to be saved from crooks. One thing you will notice is that, in spite of the multitude of churches, you will find very little tolerance and love in this area. I always thought the message of Jesus was love and understanding and tolerance. I have to assume this attitude of hate and division is a message from the local churches. Churches/pastors preaching us against them division need to re-examine their career choice. I believe they are committing a terrible sin.

0

Sister_Ruby 2 years, 4 months ago

"Tolerance"? You haven't actually read much that Jesus said as recorded in Matthew, Mark, Luke or John apparently. But it's true that most of Jesus's harsh words were directed at the "highly religious" people He encountered. But the word "tolerance" does not appear in the Holy Bible, only the Handbook for Liberals.

Neither does "tolerance" appear in the Declaration of Independence or the US Constitution. It's a fairly recent invention, though most people these days think it's the #1 Value. I wonder why?? What does "tolerance" accomplish except to make people ignore destructive behavior in others? And like many other "Liberal Principles" it only seems to work one way. Seen how the NY TIMES writer attacked LoLo Jones in the paper 3 days before her final race in the Olympics 100 meter hurdles? And why did he do it? Because she is a beautiful woman and at the same time an outspoken Christian who has declared that she will remain a virgin until marriage. Wow, what a Crime!! So she is attacked by some pencil neck sports writer. There's your sign for "Tolerance". Go jump in the Hudson River.

1

FryarTuk 2 years, 4 months ago

You might refresh your biblical knowledge of tolerance ("endures all things") beginning with II Corinthians 13. There are thousands of references to tolerance - Mark 9:40 (red letter) "He that is not against us is for us." Be careful, ole gal, when referencing the bible to prove an absolute. You might just make your self look absolutely silly.

0

mr_nobody 2 years, 4 months ago

That would be 1 Corinthians 13. I apologize, I'm a stickler for details.

0

FryarTuk 2 years, 4 months ago

You are correct. No apology necessary. Thanks for the note.

0

mr_nobody 2 years, 4 months ago

You obviously have no clue what the message of Jesus is. If you think local churches are teaching hate and division, go to them and see for yourself. I can tell you emphatically, MINE DOES NOT. Unless you can base your claims on what you know for a fact, you have no right to accuse pastors and churches.

0

FryarTuk 2 years, 4 months ago

There are churches that teach division. In fact there was an admission of it by several of the pastors this past Sunday when from the churches they sought signatures for the petition of Heard to be added to the ballot for the at large seat on the DCSB. That is raw, unadulterated division, hate and bigotry. You don't have enough paint to whitewash it.

0

bigbob 2 years, 4 months ago

Just have to look at the school board election to see there is hate in churchs. Go ahead & tell me you are dumb enough to believe the preachers would have pulled this election stunt if Brown had of won.

0

mr_nobody 2 years, 4 months ago

My contention is making baseless accusations regarding the church. If someone has been there and seen/heard it first hand (a basis), that's one thing. To assume it is happening based on [whatever] and then making public accusations based on inference, is another. I have a feeling I would be terribly disappointed with some churches, if I had first-hand knowledge. The fact is, I don't, I don't know _ church's motives, I haven't asked/given them a chance to defend themselves, and I'm definitely not going to smear a church based on an assumption. The last time I checked, Jesus has a pretty high opinion of the church (church in general), and therefore, I'm not going to flippantly criticize it.

For the life of me, I cannot understand someone retiring and moving to Albany. I endured many years in Albany, longing for retirement, so that I could leave.

0

FryarTuk 2 years, 4 months ago

Great culture - Albany Theater, Darton Players, Albany Museum of Art, Dr. Leroy Bynum and the Fine Arts program at ASU, Weatherbee Planetarium, Sasser Flea Market, (certain proclivities of the director notwithstanding), the Albany Symphony is very good. Decent primary medical care, great emergency medicine. Excellent recreation - hunting, fishing, golf, Flint River, Lake Blackshear, baseball, (football not so hot). Plenty of good civic clubs with great projects to volunteer service. A decent airport (needs improved service). Streets and downtown are clean and well maintained. Excellent EMS and fire department. Deficient policing and wasteful governments (all) offer a cause to throw one's self into. If Albany can get a handle on the government organization issues and the corruption in the school system we'll see major improvement in those areas quickly. There are some churches in the community that are reaching out to each other but a lot of work is yet to be done. Last but not least we have a darn good media group in Albany area headed by the Albany Herald followed by afiliates of NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC, PBS and a host of radio stations.

0

LuLu 2 years, 4 months ago

Well since you brought it up, what is it with the lady who runs the Sasser Flea Market???!! I've had a couple of run-ins with her and recently found out I'm not the only one. I love that place and could spend hours there, but I refuse to go back and spend one red cent there!

0

agirl_25 2 years, 4 months ago

Never been to the flea market in Sasser.......but a friend who recently retired has talked about maybe hitting some flea markets on weekends.....so the one is Sasser is not a good idea huh? And the reason is ........................?

0

KaosinAlbany 2 years, 4 months ago

I have shopped there plenty of times and never had a bad experience. Go, you might find a bargain.

0

LuLu 2 years, 4 months ago

Oh, definitely go. Like I said, I love the place. It's huge and there's a lot to see. Plan to spend at least a couple of hours there.

0

agirl_25 2 years, 4 months ago

OK we shall go ....have that on our list of things to do....places to go..people to see..history to make...thanks.....

0

agirl_25 2 years, 4 months ago

I know what you mean Clif.....we moved back to Georgia but I would not live in Albany or DoCo if you paid me...I have a small farm in a neighboring county and am very content and only come to Albany to go to the MCLB to shop. The bypass is as close as I get to even touching down in Albany.

0

Hate the sin, love the sinner. From my shoes that defines tolerance. I do not dispute the almighty Sister Ruby on knowledge of biblical details though.

0

ontario1966 2 years, 4 months ago

I am a white male, born and raised in America, when I was in the service all of us service members only saw one color and that it green! Now that I live in Leesburg, Albany has opened my eyes to see White and Black and I am learning that is not a goog combination, thanks Albany for teaching that Racism!! Just one one thing? Seems Blacks and Whites Forget! If we bleed we ALL BLEED RED! I can't wait to retire to get away from this hatred.

1

ontario1966 2 years, 4 months ago

I did forget one other thing to say, I have also been to many Church's all around the world, and this so called Bible Belt I am seeing is out of control! Every Pastor or what ever they want to be called, needs to go back to school them selfs! And learn about history, and quit teaching the bible wrong, this just makes me so sick!! So many ministers here are out for greed and money, and Racism not God.

They are all so full of bullcrap...

0

When the folks in this town quit perpetuating the sterotypes, and start acting like intelligent people, with the brains and sense God gave them, they might actually get ahead in this world. No one is asking anyone to "conform", just drop the sterotypical attitudes, and start earning the respect they are demanding. I think I have said something like this before...the Civil Rights activists prepared a path for things to improve, but I don't think that the more recent generations understand what they were fighting for. Somewhere along the way the goal changed from equality to entitlement. I don't think that people realize how much dignity is lost in entitlement.

0

tywebb 2 years, 4 months ago

the people getting the entitlements (as a career) really don't care about dignity. they don't have any, they don't want any, and they probably wouldn't know what it was if it bit them on the butt.

Albany is a result of people living too much from the past and not enough of the future.

2

Kenny36 2 years, 4 months ago

No, Albany is a result of free handouts and people being voted into office because of the color of their skin. I hate that Mayor James Gray died for more reasons than the fact that the man died. When he died, Albany started going down hill and hasn't stopped tumbling yet.

0

Somebody 2 years, 4 months ago

People voting for people by color of skin has been going on since whenever and all races are guilty of it. And handouts is hurting the whole country not just Albany.

0

agirl_25 2 years, 4 months ago

I remember when he died and thinking......Oh my .... now what is going to happen with Mayor Daley (in reference to Daley of Chicago) gone....I always compared him, in my mind, to Mayor Daley's methods for some reason......don't know why. He just reminded me of him because of the way he looked, maybe, just don't know. Anyway, he sure seemed to get things done when he was mayor. He did not always make the best decisions but did do a good job the majority of the time and I will bet you if he were here today there would not be the problems the city is having. Tommie boy would be given a run for his money.

I know members of the biggest church in Leesburg (Yeah that one) who have members who are married inter-racially and have children. They attend this church but are secretly thought of as sinners by the membership. " I know they go to our church but it just isn't right they are sinning out in the open" lol I get a kick outta Christians tat are just too stupid to know any better.......

It will never end as long as racists and Christians keep raising children racism and judging of others will continue!

1

agirl_25 2 years, 4 months ago

Gimme a vowel.......are they sinners because they are an interracial couple who had children together and had sexual relations and that was wrong? I must admit I am not at all up on the rules and regulations of the Bible, being an athiest so you have to explain it to me. Of course sometimes I think it is best to be dumb about this sort of thing because I have so many other things to worry about that I think are more important than who two people are married to. Anyway, an explanation would be appreciated. I remain so thankful...Mrs. Dilligaf......smile

0

Hoodie 2 years, 4 months ago

Beats me I'm in the Athiest club as well!

0

agirl_25 2 years, 4 months ago

Well no matter, if they are in church the people who are gossiping about them should be ashamed of themselves......for isn't that some sort of a sin in itself? The churchgoers should be glad to see the people in church shouldn't they? Isn't that what it is all about? Worshiping together? And thay call themselves Christians!!! Hrumpppp..isn't that always the way? What is the line from the old Billy Joel song....."I'de rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints...the sinners are much more fun"..... and it looks like in this case the saints are kind of two-faced, huh? That is not to say that the couple are sinners either, not in my book, but it seems they have been tagged as sinners by the fine church going people and if I had my choice I would rather spend my time dancing in the streets with them....just sayin.....Mrs. Dilligaf

Crock. Pure and simple. Get back to Africa and see how it's going there.

Why is the WORLD trying to get into the USA? It's the land of opportunity. So, no matter how YOU got here, even if your great, great grammmmammmma got here against her will......realize that YOU are in THE GREATEST, MOST FREE, MOST OPPORTUNISTIC NATION IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD.......and make YOUR OWN WAY. QUIT TALKING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED 150 YEARS AGO WHICH NOBODY CURRENTLY ALIVE HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH..................and earn YOUR OWN WAY and just take 30 seconds each day to thank the Merciful God in Heaven that you are no longer in Africa or wherever the HELL else you might have been if not for your great great grammmmmammma.

Actually Africa would be a wonderful place to live but your distant relatives robbed the land of its natural resources and ruined it…………

0

agirl_25 2 years, 4 months ago

Go to South Africa...I have friends from there and some who travel there extensively....they say SA is a jewel. One friend used to live in Kimberley, South Africa and worked the diamond trade. His family had a small mining concern in the area and DeBeer's gobbled them up, as they did every small company in the area and he is now a courier for the company. You should watch the movie Blood Diamond and see how the conditions were there before 2000. I don't think it was my relatives who robbed the land tho.....read some books. Go to Sierra Leona, or how about Liberia and help your brothers and sisters in their civil war..how about helping them in their struggles? Why complain about how it USED to be a great place to live? Get off your duff, Africa is a huge place....get on over there and pick a place and help her in her struggles....she needs a lot of help....go for it........Mrs. Dilligaf

The power is in numbers, the good people(all races) seen fit to see the greater good in nominating Mrs. Price. I believe people(all races) are tired of all of the bad here an just want some peace. Racism should be being taught in the history books ,on how it was then , not how we live now. No thanks to Pastor Heard's fanning the already heated embers of racism. There are no segregated toilets or water fountains around here.Only segregated minds It's time for all races to see that our children's best interest are at stake an the future growth of our city . It's a shame that our so called leaders cant see it that way. I hope for everyone's sake ,the power in numbers shows in November.

He ain't a pastor....he is just a Mr. Heard...he calls himself Pastor..i can't find any reference to the fact he even went to a divinity college....someplace said he started preaching at 17...big whoop....that does not make someone a pastor..if i stood in a garage..does that make me a car???

The cartoon is a ploy to exploit simple people into believing their station in life is irremedial because they can not get a hand up. The effect is to infantalize the downtrodden because they never self-actualize and thus make them dependent on a svengali (or self-serving preacher) to always think for the "downtrodden" masses. History is replete with groups of people being disadvantaged by another. The Irish are an American example too. Hated and scorned for generations they were ensnared in serfdom through indentured servant arrangements and class discrimination. No one has any excuse whatsoever for being a dead beat in the United States of America today.

0

TRUTH101 2 years, 4 months ago

Not true.......I believe the cartoon is speaking the truth and my "situation" in life is not "irremedia"l, I grew up in Quail Pines (few success stories do not make up for 400yrs of oppression)...LOL....by the way the Irish were not in-slaved for centuries and then forced to live under jim-crow laws as recent as 60yrs ago...... Apples and Oranges

0

agirl_25 2 years, 4 months ago

Yeah and you sure don't see the Irish whining the way you do the blacks.....have you ever seen a group of Irish here in the US whining and moaning and having boycotts and screaming about racial equality? Goodness no...they are too happy to be out of Ireland and over here having jobs. Do you have any idea how hard it is to leave Ireland and come to the US? They don't march and riot and have sit-ins. I have been to Ireland and they have fun there too and the pubs are some of the most fun places you will ever go to. Sure there is poverty there too but you don't see a bunch of nasty thugs with pants hanging down around their hips with attitude problems (some elder will give them a rap across the head with a stick). Get over it TRUTH101..your arguments are old..you apparently have never been out in the world and only know what you have seen on TV or been told by some angry person. Get out in the world and experience life for yourself and stop getting your ideas by what someone else or some media tells you. You said you grew up...I doubt you have grown up.....sounds like you have yet to "grow up".as there is a lot more to life than just physical stature.....we grow in different ways.......have a wonderful time growing....Mrs. Dilligaf..
