BLAKELY -- Mr. Hamp Barfield, 71, passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at his residence after a long battle with cancer. His funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2:00 PM at the New Hope Baptist Church with the Revs: Matt Bonnette, Eddie Middleton and Sterling Jones officiating. The family will receive friends at the church, Monday, from 1:00 PM until funeral time at 2:00 PM. Active pallbearers will be Roscoe Stewart, Eddie Riley, Lamar Blackman, Ed Sheffield, Jack Sanders, Tyner Cooper and Emmett Mock. Honorary pallbearers will be all Deacons (Active & Inactive) of New Hope Baptist Church.
Mr. Barfield was born October 12, 1940 in Douglasville, Ga. to the late Rev. Claude Barfield and Vera McLarty Barfield. He graduated from Damascus High School in 1959 and attended Perry Business School in Albany, Ga. and then settled in Early County, near Damascus, Ga. After farming several years, he went to work at Georgia-Pacific Paper Mill where he worked for 40 years as a mechanic. When he retired he worked at his hobby of gun refinishing and repair. He was a deacon of New Hope Baptist Church where he attended faithfully until illness prevented his going.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Charlene Middleton Barfield of Blakely, Ga., two daughters and sons-in-laws, Ginger and Greg Weathersby and Melanie and Kyle Ashley, all of Blakely, Ga.; 3 grandchildren, Lanie DeLoach, Nic Weathersby and Ella Ashley- all of Blakely; a sister, Ann Davis of Pensacola, Fl. and a brother, Sammy Barfield and Brenda of Rincon, Ga. He also has a sister-in-law, Henrinel Middleton of Blakely, Ga. and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
