SYLVESTER -- Mr. Marvin Douglas "Al" (Papa) Alexander, 79, of Sylvester died Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at the Willson Hospice House in Albany.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 16, 2012 at Banks Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in the Akridge Cemetery in Mitchell County with military honors. The Rev. Julian Griner and Mr. John Monroe will be officiating.
Mr. Alexander was born on December 26, 1932 in Overton, TX., to the late William and Mary Alexander He had lived in Sylvester for the past 14 years moving here from Doerun. Mr. Alexander retired as a Gunnery Sergeant from the United States Marine Corps having served in the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was formerly employed with Firestone, was former Post Commander at William F. Sikes V.F.W. Post 4825 and Albany V.F.W. Post 2785. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was very loyal to the United Sates Marine Corps.
Survivors include his wife, Margareettee Burtz Alexander of Sylvester, children, Russ (Laney) Alexander of Albany, Bonnie (Jim) Hall of Albany, Carla (Ray) Hayes of Sylvester, J.D. Massey of Moultrie, Don (Pat) Miller of Asheboro, NC, Lorne Miller of Tallahassee, FL, and George (Dale) Miller of Key Stone Heights, FL; 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 2 great-great great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Banks Funeral Home.
In addition to his parents Mr. Alexander was preceded in death by 8 siblings.
