Mother of dead inmate files suit against city of Pelham

PELHAM, Ga. — A woman is suing the south Georgia town of Pelham over the death of her son in its jail.

Sandrini Scott said her 17-year-old son weighed 153 pounds when he was transferred from the Fulton County Jail in February 2011 because of overcrowding. Fabian Avery III was found dead nearly a month later at the Pelham jail weighing 108 pounds. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said he died of appendicitis and complications from a bowel obstruction. His mother's suit accuses the police department, correctional officers and others of giving minimal attention to his deteriorating condition.

City attorney Philip Savrin told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the jail staff would have provided more medication if there had been any indication Avery needed it.

He was in jail on armed robbery charges.
