SMITHVILLE — There’s a nesting box full of activities planned, but the main attraction for Smithville’s annual festival remains the chicken pie.
The Smithville Recreation Club is already making preparations for the two major Fall events conducted each October.
First up is the Miss Smithville Blue Jean Pageant scheduled Saturday, Oct. 20. The pageant is a preliminary event to the Chicken Pie Festival the following weekend. Betsy Usry said she expects this year’s pageant to be “our biggest and best yet.”
The pageant begins at 2 p.m. with age categories for every girl up to age 18. The age divisions range from Baby Miss Smithville Blue Jean to Miss Smithville Blue Jean.
Usry said the pageant is designed for the participants to have fun and be natural.
The Chicken Pie Festival begins Saturday, Oct. 27, with 5K and 10.2K sanctioned runs and a one-mile fun run. The parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. led by the “Festival Chicken.”
The Smithville Recreation Club will start selling chicken pie plates at 11 a.m. on Oct. 27. They will begin judging in the chicken pie contest at the same time. Prizes will be awarded later in the day. First prize is $100.
Money raised in the festival is used for community projects including financing the July Fourth fireworks, Downtown Santa at Christmas and the communitywide Easter egg hunt.

Sure wish they would consider moving this event to the first weekend in November. Would love to participate in this festival, but October is already full for vendors.
