AMERICUS — The Georgia Southwestern men’s basketball team will travel to Auburn University on Nov. 5 to take on the Tigers in a preseason exhibition game at 8 p.m. in the 9,100-seat Auburn Arena.
It’s the second meeting in three years for the two schools. Auburn defeated GSW, 78-50, in 2010 in a game during which the Hurricanes trailed AU by just six points at halftime.
The Hurricanes have peppered their schedule with games against larger Division I opponents during the last three years. In addition to the Nov. 5 matchup at Auburn, GSW faces the University of Central Florida this season. The Hurricanes traveled to Florida State for an exhibition last season prior to squaring off against AU in 2010. Before those contests, it had been almost 27 years since the Hurricanes played a school out of a major Division I conference. GSW came up short against the University of Texas in 1983, losing, 77-60, in Austin.
GSW opens its 2012-13 regular season with five consecutive home games, beginning Nov. 9 when Fort Valley State visits the Storm Dome at 3 p.m.
Auburn is coming off a 15-16 season where the Tigers were strong at home (14-3) but struggled on the road (1-10). They return their top scorer, junior Frankie Sullivan (12.6 ppg), but will be without their second-leading scorer and top rebounder, Kenny Gabriel (12.2 ppg, 7.3 rpg).
GSW is coming off of a 12-14 campaign in which the Hurricanes were a perfect 9-0 in non-conference play before stumbling to a 3-14 record in Peach Belt action after a rash of injuries and departures.
