Albany native Gaybriel Dixon, manager of the new Mattress Firm store at 2723 Dawson Road, has been with the retailer for about one year.
ALBANY — Gaybriel Dixon is manager of the new Mattress Firm store, set tentatively to open Saturday. While his job will likely be anything but “soft,” he looks forward to meeting with the public and helping them “save money and sleep happy,” he said.
“We know that dealing and shopping for mattresses is not easy,” Dixon said. “It’s a big investment, so we give you 100 days to try the bed out. On top of that, we guarantee the lowest prices out there.”
Mattress Firm, one of the largest mattress retailers, is located at 2723 Dawson Road in the former location of Moe’s Southwest Grill and two other businesses. With a total retail area of over 8,000 square feet, Dixon says the store is on the “larger side” of typical as compared with other stores within the company. Rich McNair, manager of the Valdosta Mattress Firm, had said his store was barely half the size of the Albany facility.
McNair said the mattress company has been “growing exponentially” for the past several years, buying some competitive chains, including Mattress Giant. According to McNair, Mattress Firm currently operates more than 1,000 retail stores nationwide and went public as a company a few months ago.
The retailer sells most major mattress brands, including Sealy, Tempur-pedic, Simmons and Serta. Financing is available at the Albany store through Wells Fargo, Dixon said, for those with steady work history. The store will also maintain a local warehouse and offer one-day mattress delivery “in many cases.”
Dixon, 29, who has been with Mattress Firm for about a year, said he is originally from Albany but moved to Atlanta with his mother when he was a child. His father remains in Albany, working at the Procter & Gamble plant for 30 years. According to Dixon, he noticed the management opportunity through a company email posting and applied right away.
“I’m happy to be back in Albany,” Dixon said.
