Blacks in Dougherty County have fought for years to gain control of the County School System. When they finally get it the first thing they do is steal the children's lunch money; hire a completely inadequate superintendent and pillage program funds to give to the likes of Derrell Sabb and Joe Washington.

I was once told that only a black man can teach a black child--teach them what? One look at the crime rate in Albany answers that question....

I think we need the input of both white and black on the school board. We have got to do something because the Dougherty County School System is a complete mess. Every week there are huge problems that crop up with the way it is now. We need a school board who makes positive and professional decisions regarding personnel and the monies. We do not have that majority now. The first thing is to get Murphee out of here before he finishes wrecking and breaking the school system. Our children deserve better than this.

Look folks, it isn't like this hasn't been going on all along. I can remember back when my Child went to Summer School in Dougherty County. It was a mess back then if you had the slightest idea of what you were looking at. So it isn't totally the Black individuals on the Board. They just aren't as skilled as previous individuals were at covering up what was, and is going on. I would imagine if a forensic audit went on for all of Albany's / Dougherty's governmental payouts for the last thirty years you would be shocked. I remember an Assistant City Manager that got acolades for their handling of the flood, yet their marriage partner was making a killing in City contracts. Somehow, programs and penalties need to be in place to make this sort of thing a lot more risky than it currently is.

It is just so easy for the hand to reach into the cookie jar. The banks are audited by banking and finance, the trucking business is audited by Public Service Commission and Insurance also audits. Why not DOE? Credit Unions also get audited. There should be an audit for Title I funds and any state funds. Just audit the schools who get Title I and the various agencies too. I could do it and I only kept books. Wonder how this came out, you smell Lloyd?

Just face it black or white most people who run for school board, commisioner, etc have their own agenda. Their are a few who do it because they want to inprove the county but most want to inprove their own standing. Think about it.

2

Griff 1 year, 8 months ago

Correct. Why else would they spend all the money and effort to get elected. No salary, no benefits, most have no children in the system.

Hopefully, anyone entering public service has an "agenda", something they want to accomplish. The question is whether that agenda primarily involves the good of the community or finding a place at the feed trough. Making the operations transparent and having a media to report accurately in a timely manner would help identify who falls into the latter category. But then, you have to have a community with sufficient character to "throw the bums out".

She is a liar and a thief and she runs unopposed. There isn't anyone in Albany that has the guts to stand up and say "Enough is enough"!

I agree with tocar. The racial make-up of the Board shouldn't have anything to do with their qualifications, although some want to make it so. It's very ironic to me that only after Lane Price won her seat did Mr. Heard make his intentions known to run as an Independent. Usually folks get that process going well before the LAST DAY of qualifying.

As long as the school board members are professional, ethical and have the school system's and kids' best interests at heart, I don't care if they are green. Of course, it may be that at this point, only Martians would be qualified to clean up this mess, but I think they would just turn around and go back to their home planet.

At the time, they weren't prepared for the butt kicking Anita Williams Brown was going to get. They already had their black person running. They didn't want to run against another black. When Browm got defeated they had to put all their wheels into motion. I'll bet Mr. Heard doesn't even want that spot, but drew the short straw from the other pastors.

I'll say it again---Albany & Dougherty county---WHAT A MESS!!! The only way to clean it up is permanently ban all current "leaders" black & white, from the city and county, stop recruiting "leaders" from ASU, the governor declare martial law to bring the gangs, not just the street gangs, but the Pine Avenue gangs, into compliance with the law. Smoke all of them out and start over again.

She is a liar and a thief and is running unopposed for the schoolboard... How the he!! does anyone expect things to change? Some of the people of Albany just don't care.

The black ministerial group decreed that no one would oppose her. It was an effort to bolster her defense. With the lopsided victory of Dr. Price over James Bush and Anita BW a quick fix was attempted to save that seat. Some of the black ministers in this town will not lose the DCSS checkbook without a fight. Unconcernedas to the fallout their attitude is if they lose the federal funds by losing control at the Board, it's no different than losing them by non-compliance. As one of my black friends told me, "we're talking Cadillacs and BMWs here."

0

Jimboob 1 year, 8 months ago

If that is true than the whole bunch of them should go to he!! They can come up with someone to run aginst a qualified candidate but let that lier Velvet Riggins go unopposed? I hope someone investigates this den of snakes.

Let me see if I can make my point a bit clearer. An assistant State Auditor who was our neighbor told my wife and I in the late 1980's the GA Attorney General could assign a team of prosecutors for DCSS and it would take at least 5 years to clean it out. There is no question the comments made about prior years' corruption are accurate in which case it presents a great opportunity for correction by the people DCSS will primarily serve. Abraham Lincoln once paraphrased Johnathan Swift's words " Nobody knows where the shoe pinches so well as he that wears it. " Meaning that DoCo black children and families for sometime have been and are wearing the pinching shoe caused by inadequate education. So here the County produces people like Herbert Phipps, Dorothy Hubbard, James Black MD and a few others but none of the achievers show up at DCSS. Instead James Bush, Anita Brown, Velvet Riggins and June Bug Williams appear as the ruling gang and hire an incompetent person to manage the system. All the while the black students and families are wearing the pinching shoe, needing critical life saving, life building educational programs. It is reasonable to conclude that people who have experienced the pinching shoe in education would seize the opportunity for service to the students in critical need but that has not been the case. Their service has been self-service and their agenda has been anything but addressing the needs of the students and accountability to honor. Is there not one black citizen who will step forward to assume the mantle of leadership responsibly? It is easy to say it doesn't matter if the DCSB is black or white. In this case it does. Certainly a cross section of the population is a better board representation but the community at large, including blacks and whites, need a black person to step forward and play a responsible, honorable leadership role in the re-habilitation and development of DCSS. If for no other reason than it would serve as a role model for youth and young adults, evan perhaps for all of us, that a black person will lead and work co-operatively with DoCo citizens on the great mission of education.

goodbye Albany, we finally got our orders and we are leaving....I will not even look back as we cross the Ga. Line.. This area is getting worse than Mexican Border towns with crime, drugs, murder, protitution and corruption. The Police areas bad as they are in TiJuana, the politicians as bad as in Juarez, and the streets are like being in Beirut. Albany Ga. The stateside version of Iraq.

All the problems with school board and other local government bodies in the county/city are the fault of the voters. For years the voters have voted race instead of qualifications. This is what it got us. My grandmother said it best... "When me and your papa lived there in the sixties the racism of the majority was holding it back, that's still what holds it back today."
