KICKOFF 2012: SGA loses season opener to Ashford (Ala.) on last-second FG

ASHFORD, Ala. — Southwest Georgia Academy's football season started with a rollercoaster ride in the final minutes as the Warriors stormed back to take the lead in the fourth quarter and then lost to Ashford Academy, 27-25, on a last-second 34-yard field goal.

Will Warren scored on a 10-yard run with a little more than three minutes left in the game to give SGA a 25-24 lead.

Warren also scored on a 5-yard run, and Cabe Rathel scored on a 10-yard run to give SGA a 13-12 halftime lead, but Ashford came back and took a 25-13 lead with seven minutes left in the game.

Clay Bell then connected with Corey Smith on a 35-yard TD pass and then Bell intercepted a pass with about a little more than four minutes left to give the Warriors a chance to take the lead. They did on Warren's second TD run, but Ashford pulled out the win — after spiking the ball to stop the clock with seconds left — on a field goal as time expired.

Attempts to reach SGA coach David Bell after the game were unsuccessful.

SGA (0-1) will next be at home Friday against Deerfield-Windsor, which will open its season in Damascus.

It's too bad that the Georgia High School Association is afraid to let private schools play them in sports so you have to go all the way to Alabama or Florida to expand competition.
