Herbert Phipps, the presiding judge of the Georgia Court of Appeals, seen at his portrait unveiling at the Dougherty County Courthouse, has been appointed chief judge of the Georgia Court of Appeals.
ALBANY, Ga. — Georgia Appeals Court Judge Herbert E. Phipps will be the speaker Thursday when the Albany Civil Rights Institute conducts its monthly Community Night at 7:30 p.m. at the museum on 326 Whitney Ave.
Phipps, who was a judge in Dougherty Circuit Superior Court before joining the appellate court, graduated from Morehouse College and earned his doctorate at Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio, where he served as an editor of the Law Review.
In 1971 Phipps, a Baker County native, joined C.B. King’s law firm, which specialized in civil rights litigation. He also has served as magistrate and associate judge of the Dougherty County State Court and is a member of the Judicial Council of Georgia.
“It’s important to revisit the past,” Loretta Jones-Singleton, community night coordinator, said. “Only then can we truly go forward as a people. We believe in teaching all ages and races the importance of their history.”
ACRI Community Night is scheduled to be conducted on the fourth Thursday evening of the month through October. The event is free to the public. For more information, contact (229) 432-1698.
