Randolph Southern's Madison Ragan has had an incredible last four games, which have included two no-hitters and two one-hitters.
SHELLMAN — Madison Ragan is becoming unhittable.
And Randolph Southern’s junior pitcher is proving it over and over this season.
Ragan threw her second no-hitter of the year Tuesday, holding Westwood hitless in a four-inning, 13-0 victory to extend her scoreless inning streak to 20.
She has allowed just two hits in her last four appearances, including a no-hitter Aug. 14 against Georgia Christian and a pair of one-hitters vs. SGA Academy and Terrell Academy.
Ragan, who was runner-up for The Herald’s Player of the Year last season after racking up a 1.07 ERA, two no-hitters, three one-hitters and 168 strikeouts, has only gotten better this season.
“She has a consistency that she didn’t have last year,” said her father and coach, Rand Ragan. “She is improving on her consistency, and it’s encouraging. … Her velocity wasn’t its highest (Tuesday), but she was able to mix it up with her changeup.”
She had seven strikeouts, gave up three walks and was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, triple and three RBI.
Also for the Lady Patriots, Braylie Blanton was 2-for-3 with a triple, inside-the-park home run and three RBI; Beth Clark was 2-for-3 with an RBI; and Parker Rigsby was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
The Lady Patriots are now 5-2 overall and 3-0 in GISA Region 3-A and will play again Thursday at Fullington Academy in Pinehurst.
WESTFIELD 2, SCA 1: The Lady Eagles couldn’t conquer the two-time state runner-up Tuesday, despite a three-hitter from ace Anna Laine Brock, who struck out 10.
The only run for SCA (3-3) came after Jamie McPherson singled and eventually scored. Keyada Thomas had the Lady Eagles’ other hit.
SCA next plays at home Thursday against Tiftarea.
LATE MONDAY— SGA 14, Fullington 5, 6 innings: Addison Ponder earned the win late Monday for the Lady Warriors (8-4).
Top hitters for SGA were Allison Warren (4-for-4, HR, four RBI), Kendyl Carver (2-for-3, HR, two RBI), Katie Carver (2-for-3, RBI) and Ponder (double, two runs).
SGA next plays Westwood at home today.
Volleyball
LEESBURG — Lee County split its home opener Tuesday as it lost to Veterans (26-24 and 25-21), then beat Brooks County (25-9 and 25-10).
Leading the way for Lee was Brandi Minix (11 aces), Maggie O’Conner (seven aces, 10 kills), Sarah Dowling (eight kills) and Anna Jones (seven kills).
Lee is now 4-4 and will next play Spenser on Thursday in Leesburg.
