KICKOFF 2012: Greenwave plan to ride playmaker Scott

Four-year starting quarterback Jerkerious Scott (12) busts through a pair of Randolph-Clay defenders last season. The electric QB has had plenty of moves for the last three years, but Terrell County finished 3-7 his junior year — a season Scott and the Greenwave plan to atone for in 2012.

DAWSON — Terrell County head coach William Huff is a Wing-T guy. Always has been, always will be.

But with an electric four-year starter at quarterback who has elite track speed and can also throw it — and don’t forget a near 4.0 GPA — Huff couldn’t resist opening up the offense.

“We’ll spread the ball a little more,” Huff said. “We don’t have a lot of depth at running back (but) we’ve got a quarterback that can run and throw, so we’ve got to take advantage of what we have.”

Senior signal-caller Jerkerious Scott is the main reason for the offensive scheme change. Scott and the Greenwave suffered through a miserable 3-7 campaign last season, plagued by missed assignments and inconsistency.

“It was frustrating,” Scott said of the 2011 season before predicting not only an improved — but memorable — 2012.

Scott then added: “(We just had) a lot of mental breakdowns. We’ve got more experience (this season) and we worked hard in the weight room this summer.”

Basically, they grew up a lot in the offseason — led by Scott, who passed for 624 yards and rushed for 850 more last season, accounting for over 20 total touchdowns.

A year later, the speedy dual-threat quarterback said he’s become more mature as a leader and improved his mechanics in the past year. It also doesn’t hurt that he’s not playing behind an entirely brand new offensive line like he did a year ago.

“We had to grow up quick,” said Greenwave senior offensive guard/defensive end Micah Williams, who was one of the five linemen starting for the first time last season.

Four of those five starters up front are back, although Terrell lost Jamal Stewart for part of the season to injury.

“He’s probably worked harder than anybody all summer,” Huff said. “That was a big loss.”

The Greenwave skill players won’t hurt for speed. Scott, the guy who will touch the ball on every play, is the fastest on the team, and he’ll be joined in the backfield by track speedsters Jutori Jones and Bernard Lumpkin as well as Demarkese Carter, all part of a 17-member senior group.

The defensive front will be headed by linebackers Ish Walker, Jemere Dennard and Rakeem Spencer; Williams and Antwon Cody at defensive end and 270-pound nose Alterik Caldwell. Cornerback Anthony Williams will lead in the secondary along with junior Joe Ward and Scott.

That group is bound and determined to right the wrongs from 2011, a year that ended with the school’s lowest win total since 2003.

“Too many people have that bad taste in their mouth from last year,” Williams said.

The major concern in preseason for Huff is the drop-off from the first to second teams. Terrell doesn’t lack in numbers (about 50 dress out at practice) but is in need of quality depth at several positions.

“We’ve got (starters) and (third string) and (fourth string),” Huff said of the depth chart, noticeably leaving out the presence of No. 2s. “We don’t have ones and twos right now. That’s given us some trouble in practice with getting a true feel for where we are.”

Terrell County opens the season Aug. 31 at Marion County, part of a non-region slate that includes Chattahoochee County, Central Talbotton and Schley County.
