PASADENA, Texas — The Darton State College men’s soccer team opened its season over the weekend with wins over a pair of top programs.
On Friday, the nationally-ranked No. 3 Cavs beat No. 21 San Jacinto (Texas) College, 2-1.
Then in a rematch of last year’s national semifinal game, Darton beat No. 4 Tyler (Texas), 2-1.
Darton trailed San Jacinto 1-0 at halftime but scored twice in the final nine minutes to win the season opener. Troy Tucker assisted both goals — Patrick Dacosta scored with nine minutes remaining, and Andrew Palumbo found the back of the net with four minutes left.
Tyler and Darton combined for three red cards and 12 yellow cards in Saturday’s game, and Dacosta was one of three players to be ejected from the game.
Tucker assisted Barrington Wright for the game’s first goal, and Luis Zuluaga scored on a free kick.
Carlos Catano was in the goal for the Cavs and had five saves each game.
The Cavs (2-0) play again at 8 p.m. Wednesday at home against South Georgia College, immediately after the Darton women’s season opener.
