ALBANY, Ga. — Danny Wilkerson Jr. has been arrested for the murder of Dontavious Luke, a Rattlers gang leader, confirmed Albany Police Chief John Proctor.

Officers from the Robbery/Homicide Unit and the Gang Unit arrested Wilkerson in Thomasville Tuesday with the assistance of Thomasville authorities, he added. No further comment or information was immediately available on Wilkerson.

Three men were also arrested earlier in Albany on a variety of charges involving the murder, stated Albany Police Department reports.

The early-Sunday morning shooting death of 24-year-old Luke at the Shackelford Shopping Center parking lot could be the start of an escalating gang war, said Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards.

“He (Luke) is a recognized leader in the (Rattlers) gang and goes by the street name ‘Tater Man,’” Edwards said. “We have to stop this before the beefs between rival gangs upgrade the weapons to assault rifles to outgun the other crew. Gang members from outside Albany may be brought in to help, because they won’t be known here.”

Because the investigation is continuing, Edwards said that the he could not name which of the arrested or which of the suspects were Bloods or Rattlers. Arrested were Kelvin Drake, 24, Manasseh Skinner, 27, and Keith Roberson 30.

All were charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and criminal street gang participation.

Skinner was also charged with false report of a crime. He apparently made up a cover story involving why and where he was shot when found after 4:25 a.m. Sunday, reports added.

At first the shootings came in to dispatch as three separate crimes, but all the people involved had been at the Sand Trap Bar and the Shackelford parking lot when the shooting broke out, Edwards added.

Putting the facts together by questioning participants and people at the scene investigators linked the shootings together as a gang war and led them to believe Skinner’s story is fake.

At about 3:36 a.m. in the parking lot of the Sand Trap bar, 911 E. Oglethorpe Blvd., 23-year-old Rashad Jackson was shot in his calf. Jackson is not one of the charged, according to police reports.

Apparently the fight moved west to the Shackelford parking lot where someone fatally shot Luke. Five others including Skinner, Drake and Luke’s brother, 28-year-old Montravious Luke, suffered gunshot wounds.

A 21-year-old woman, Whitney Williams, who Edwards called an “innocent bystander,” was shot in her upper left thigh during the melee.

Edwards said innocent people can be hurt in gang wars. There was much damage done by the gang members using a variety of handguns Sunday, he said.

“As early as Sunday night retaliation plans were being made by gangs,” Edwards said. “Law enforcement is on high alert but we need the community’s help. There were dozens of witnesses Sunday. People know the gang members. They need to let us know.”

He had to travel from Thomasville to commit a murder? He could have exercised that sort of carnage in his own backyard? What madness!

So, according to the one responder, this Luke (tater man) worked at Walmart. Which one? Doesn't Walmart do backround checks? 11 assault convictions, and working with the Public? I would at least like to know if I need to be armed when going to Walmart these days. For if one worked there, I am sure others also do.

If you have the permit to conceal then I would recommend you ccw wherever you go these days - including walmart, dinner, show, etc.

They are going to rob you whether they have a job or not because that is in their nature. Just because one has a job doesn't keep them from robbing people and burglarizing houses. There was a NBA basketball player arrested for shoplifting a belt, as if he couldn't afford to pay for it.

How about for starters anyone found to be a gang member, no matter the age, if raised in a taxpayer housing his family is removed within a week and any and all welfare cut off.

What do you think of allowing them to experience the work program from Long Bignh Military Stockade in Vietnam. How many do you think would want to experience that situation more than once?

@Vietvett1 thats when they going to come in your neighborhood looking for some way to come up. Do you ppl not know there are gang members in law enforcement and all walks of life some of your lawyers n doctors are known gang members. Ive never heard of taxpayer housing if it were'nt for the public housing our city would look terrible ppl lying in da streets so thank God there is somewhere for the homeless n less fortunate.

dude, you need to come off of those names! seriously, if you KNOW who these people are, you need to let someone in law enforcement know. Personally, I think you now have a responsibility to the public to let us know who these bangers are, too! I'll check back tomorrow to see the names posted.

If u get a DUI you are a convicted felon so convict doesnt equal thug. Some of the members have nothing but the gang their mom on crack and never knew his or her father and some retard shows them some love and says hey come join my team and a 11 or twelve yr old is lost to the streets. It's a shame we spend more money on da moon then we do trying to keep our kids away from this life.#Stop neglecting our kids#

I agree that we should be spending our tax dollars on something more constructive than NASA curiosity missions.

All of this started with welfare and that is not a black thing. They are having the same problems in small rural communities up north except those thugs are white. Before welfare marriage percentages were much higher for blacks and whites. Most children were in a two parent home. Welfare discourages married couples living together raising a family. A child raised in a two parent home has a much better chance of making it, add an emphasis on education and his chances get better. Everything I have read here in the past few days proves this to me. I also believe this discussion board could help us understand each other and get rid of prior conceptions and stereotypes....y'all keep talking.
