Cancer auction raises $50,000

PLAINS, Ga. — Former President Carter and Food Network celebrity Paula Deen were a recipe for success for the Cancer Coalition of South Georgia’s Community Cancer Screening Program.

The event, which drew 165 people on Aug. 25 at the Plains Community Center, raised more than $50,000 to help pay for free cancer screenings for people in south Georgia who are uninsured or underinsured.

“We are overjoyed at how well everything turned out,” said Susan Greene, Cancer Coalition volunteer and organizer of the sold out event. “The venue was perfect, the food fabulous and the company a great mix of individuals all gathered to help raise awareness of the importance of cancer screening and the needs we have here in our communities.”

Both special guests have been impacted by cancer. Carter’s parents, two sisters and brother died from pancreatic cancer and his father-in-law suffered from leukemia. Albany native Deen’s mother battled bone cancer.

Carter, Deen and Greene were auctioneers for the night’s live auction of 11 premium items that included an onyx cross necklace handcrafted and donated by Dr. Connie Blanchard of Americus, a book by Carter that he and former first lady Rosalynn Carter signed, an original watercolor painting of Plains by Albany artist Melissa Strother and the necklace worn by Deen to the event.

The Cancer Coalition of South Georgia is a 501c(3) serving 32 counties in south Georgia with cancer research, education, screening, and outreach. For more information, visit www.sgacancer.org http://www.sgacancer.org/.

Throw Susan Greene into a challenge and she scores big every time! What a treasure she is for southwest GA. It's always good to have Paula Deen and Jimmy Carter, the best former president ever.

Very lucky to have both represent such a great cause. Every bit of money donated is going to a great cause. Average colonoscopy is $3,000 so trying to serve all the underserved in South West GA is hard
