ALBANY, Ga. — A morning crash on a busy Albany street forced police to redirect traffic for more than an hour Wednesday.

Around 8 a.m., police responded to the northbound lanes of Westover Boulevard between Old Jim Davis Road and West Gordon Avenue after receiving a report of what was initially described as a three-vehicle crash involving two tractor-trailer trucks and a small silver car.

Upon arrival, police found a two-vehicle crash involving a commercial dump truck and a silver-colored 2001 Chevy Malibu. The car sustained significant front-end damage.

A large amount of hydraulic fluid, which had been spilled during the crash, covered a portion of the roadway, prompting police to redirect traffic along Old Jim Davis Road and city engineering to erect temporary barricades as heavy equipment and dump trucks were brought in to pour sand over the oil.

APD spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said Wednesday that the inside lane on the northbound side of Westover likely could be closed for up to 48 hours as crews work to clean up the spill.

According to Banks, the driver of the Malibu, 23-year-old Robert Gillion, was traveling north on Westover when he left the roadway. When he attempted to correct his driving, he hit the dump truck and punctured the hydraulic tank on the vehicle.

There were no significant injuries, Banks said.
