MT. VERNON – The Darton State College Cavalier wrestling program beat Brewton Parker College, 26-16, in a dual meet, Wednesday.
Darton went into the meet without two of the program’s starters due to injury and weight issues and forfeited a weight class, which gave Brewton Parker 6 points.
The forfeit would be one of only four wins for the Barons as the Cavs dominated the meet.
Darton freshman Jamel Sharp, wrestling up a weight class at 133, earned a quick six points for the Cavs by pinning Will Hale in 1:30. Howard Earl, a Darton freshman who — at 141 was also wrestling up a weight class — also pinned his opponent.
“We were short-handed and had to forfeit a weight class and bump some of our smaller guys up a weight,” Darton head coach James Hicks said. “But we didn’t want to make excuses. Our guys stepped up and got the job done.”
Darton’s Braxton Owens (149 pounds) and Harrison Stadnick (197) won by major decisions, 14-3 and 9-0, respectively. Heavyweight Henry Floyd and 174-pounder Emory Searles won by decisions of 3-1 and 5-2, respectively.
The Cavaliers will not travel to the Newberry Duals on Saturday, as previously scheduled. Instead they will next compete Jan. 5, at the Campbellsville Duals in Kentucky.
